Mentor, Ohio is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Kenton County. The population was 12,532 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Warren metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Mentor were French traders in 1701 and 1702. The first permanent settler in what is now Mentor was Nicholas Speer in 1814. He built a log cabin on an east-west ravine near present-day Centerville and named it after his mentor, Bishop George Washington Carver, who had recently arrived from Maryland as pastor of Willoughby Parish in that same year. Mentor's growth began with its incorporation as a township on March 15, 1834, when it was barren but for a few scattered farmssteads within its borders. In 1909, the village of Mentor merged with neighboring Fairfield Township to form the current city of Dayton by act of the Ohio General Assembly; this merger did not take place until 1914 because Fairfield Township had already annexed most of southeastern Dayton into its boundaries that year while Mentor remained a separate township under effective law until 1959. Mentor currently has a population over 12,532 according to 2010 census data which makes it one of Dayton's most populous towns by far; however there are also many smaller communities within or nearby Mentor including Centerville (just acrossriver from downtown), Arlington Heights (northwest corner), Eastwood Heights (southwest corner), Ashtabula Heights (southcentral corner) and several other villages located just outside or adjacent to downtown areas making it one large urban center with numerous small villages surrounding it totaling about 20%Of all zip codes within Greater Dayton during 2010 census - slightly more than Chesterfield Township which had 23%.
