Mentor, Ohio is a small town located in the Akron metropolitan area that has been home to firearms enthusiasts for over 120 years. The town was once known as "The Gun Town" because of the high concentration of NRA members and gun manufacturers who lived and traded there. Mentor's history with firearms starts with its first pistols, which were made by George A. Smith in 1868. The town also mused about starting a handgun manufacturing business but this never came to fruition. In 1903, Mentor became the home of America's first Pistol and Rifle Show. At that event, exhibitors from all over brought their latest products to display and trade with each other. It wasn't until 1935 that the first shooting range was built in Mentor - it would be expanded and renovated multiple times over the years. Mentor, Ohio is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Lorain County. The population was 5,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. Mentor began as an agricultural community on the Scioto River near today's Mentor Heights and was first settled by squatters from what is now Youngstown in 1824. The name "Mentor" come from an Indian word meaning "calming water." A post office called Mentor was established in 1828, and remained in operation until it closed in 1907. In 1851, territorial government was transferred from Harrison to Lorain County; Mentor became its county seat. The Erie Railroad reached Mentor in 1862 and quickly became one of the most important transportation arteries in central Ohio. The town developed into a thriving commercial center with many heavy industry expansions during the late 19th century including sugar beet production (1886), meatpacking (1901), breweries (1912), foundry manufacturing (1935), light manufacturing (1957) and auto parts retailing (1971). In 1965, Mentor voters passed a referendum approving annexation by Akron as part of that city's growth following enactment of plans to suburbanize much of downtown Akron complete with highways and mass housing developments taking over land formerly used for agriculture which had been abandoned since World War II. The annexation process led to some tension between Akron residents who wanted their city back while Mentors sought continued access to their old communities across the river where they could still find grocery stores, churches, schools, businesses and residences richly detailed Victorian homes dating back to when corn prices were expensive enough for people to buildexpensive estates on their property rather than just park them on a piece of ground they rented from someone else like many did before railroadroads cut through those areas rendering them nearly uninhabitable due to lack of trees or other natural features making camping/living there difficult or impossible without prior permission from those owning land within walking distance of those properties as well as paying large sums for easements allowing development on that land beyond what had originally been planned or required by law after years being forced off their properties because developers felt they couldn't charge more than market value for what they were selling because there wasn't anything else nearby that would provide similar services - something which continues today even though there are numerous neighborhoods specifically designed around amenities such as streetscape painting etc., not single-family home shopping malls with driveways out front like many have become over time) Eventually all but two blocks east side of I-675 southbound between Rensselaer Street & Cicero Avenue were annexed by Akron increasing its size past what Mentoring could offer commercially except for about three blocks north side along Rensselaer Street between Euclid Avenue & Delaware Avenue annexed by Canton becoming Canton East Side finally giving rise both namesakes recognition bordering each other rather than just continuing downriver concurrently
Mentor was founded in 1814 as a school for boys. It became an private college in 1821 and, after being purchased by the Ohio General Assembly in 1830, became the state's first university. In 1863, it merged with Buckeye State Normal School to become the University of Ohio. The university was renamed the Ohio State University in 1957. In 1969, it became a public university and has since grown into one of the United States' most diverse and powerful institutions of higher education.
