The area now comprising Mentor was part of Delaware Township when it was founded in 1814. It became a town in 1868. Mentor has been home to many famous people including General George Washington and Ulysses S. Grant. In 1919, the first black student at Ohio State University attended school in Mentor; he later served as chancellor of that university from 1969 until his death in 2002. In 1926, Franklin D Roosevelt Jr., future U.S. president, moved to Mentor to become an assistant secretary of agriculture under New Deal administrator Henry Wallace. He died there two years later after a long illness.

The first store in Mentor opened on State Street in 1835. In 1845, the city incorporated as a town under the name of Waverly Heights. In 1907, John Davenport organized what became known as Ohio's Agricultural Experiment Station (AES) here in Mentor to promote agriculture throughout Ohio and neighboring states through research into new crops and methods. Today, AES remains an important part of Cleveland-Akron's economy with its research facilities and graduate programs that cover many disciplines including engineering, business, science, agricultural sciences, information technology and environmental studies. In 1978–79 – during the height of economic globalization – AES moved from its original headquarters on Euclid Avenue to its current location on Delaware Avenue NW in response to community demand for more open space within walking distance of businesses and services. The city has experienced many expansions over time; some examples include: Homes were built all around town starting with six lots on Main Street east of Clinton street which were sold between 1840-1850 by Leonard Haskell who also developed Haseltown upriver (now home to FirstEnergy). In 1865 when Mentor became a town again it had 24 lots scattered around which were auctioned off for $1 each Thereafter always homes near downtown started being built especially since there was no public transportation or schools so people had to build their own homes quickly especially if they could find land/money for it . Most recently there have been several developments such as: West Side Place located just north of I-71 exit 3 & west side which includes 9 acres & 2 buildings totaling 123 feet x 87 feet lot facing east along I-71 Exit #5; North Side Place across I-71 exit #3 from Lake Erie where 5 acres & 1 building totaling 106 feet x 95 feet lot faces east along US 422 Alternate route towards Cleveland; East Side Place located just south of I-271 exit #8 from Erie county 2 smaller buildings totaling 85 feet x 80 feet lot facing east along I-271 exit #8 towards Shaker Heights
Mentor was founded in 1814 by Nicholas Mentor and David Bicknell. The company became a leading educational resource for young people in Ohio. In 1865, the company merged with the Cincinnati Educational Exchange Company to become the Cincinnati- Mentor Education Company. In 1907, the company merged with Dayton’s First National Bank to form Dayton-Mentor Bank. The bank continued its role as a provider of education resources until it ceased operations in 1984.
