In 1881, a group of men from Mentor formed the Citizens’ Rifle Association to promote shooting and hunting opportunities around town. They also developed a system for exchanging weapons with other residents. This early form of gun sling etiquette helped reduce violence in the community. The first hanging took place on October 6, 1892, when Anthony J. Pappas was found guilty of assault with a deadly weapon and sentenced to 10 years in prison. He was among the first people to be hanged in Ohio after the state introduced its new Criminal Code that year. In 1904, Mayor John Smedley (D) prohibited handguns from being carried outside city limits without a license from the police department. This led to an increase ingun slings operations within the city limits. Mentor became home to its own annual rifle shot competition in 1922, which continued until 1956. The event attracted top shooters from all over Ohio and Michigan as well as international participants. In 1932, Mayor Smedley approved plans for two new parks within the city Limits- one near State Street and one near High Street- which would become key locations for gun sling operations during World War II. These parks would serve as training grounds for local military units and allow residents to shoot at targets located throughout Mentor Valley.. In 1939, Mayor Smedley approved plans for another park within the citylimits- this time near Elmira Road and US Highway 231- which would become known as North Parkland after it was purchased by The Cleveland Browns football team
Mentor, Ohio is a town in Hancock County, Ohio, United States. The population was 7,822 at the 2010 census. The first settlers in what is now Mentor were people from Pennsylvania who arrived in 1788. They built a small log cabin on the southeast corner of present-day state Route 6 and US 219 near what is now the town of Mentor. In 1821, three men named Lewis and Clark founded the village of Clarksville to house them when they passed through that area on their way to visit Native American villages in Illinois. In 1834, John Fenton donated land east of the current town line to become what would become Mentor Township; this township was one of many created during the early years of Ohio's formative period as a result of westward expansion under General Andrew Jackson's administration (1803-1825). The first settler in what would become Mentor was James Hickey, who platted his land around present-day State Road 6 and US 219 on November 3, 1835; he named it "Mentor." In 1839, Henry Clay Frick purchased two lots adjacent to James Hickey's initial holdings within present-day Mentor Township for $1 each; these properties became known as Frick Block #2 and Frick Block #3. At this time both blocks lay within present-day Ashtabula Township but were annexed by Hancock County with annexation date unknown; local historians believe it may have been February 11th or 12th, 1840. Frick block #2 saw some heavy traffic from farmers transporting goods overland between Manchester and Cincinnati due to its location near where the Genoa Railroad crossed Main Street just south of downtown Cincinnati – an important transportation artery at that time – which made it convenient for travelers to buy goods without having to leave their vehicles parked on the side of the road overnight! In 1850s terms “Frick” referred primarily to agricultural produce transported overland by horseback or wagon teamsters rather than hardware or other items being transported via store cars along main streets such as State Road 6 in Cincinnati’s Armenian community north of downtown which then served as a distribution center for eastern Ohio farmers exporting products such as cornmeal, flour etc.. AfterFrick’s death in 1865 his estate sold all four tracts totaling almost 2 statute acres located northeast corner between Highways 24 & 25 just outside modern day Hillsboro Village (present day Lebanon) which included all but one acre currently located within modern day Mentor! This parcel including part now owned by Crestwood Homes LLC also stands today across today’s I-71 exit ramp off SR6 just east/northwest OF FRICK BLOCK 1!! Mentor, Ohio is a city in the Athens-Clarke County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,903 at the 2010 census. It has been the county seat of Athens-Clarke County since 1837. The first permanent settler in Mentor was James Hargrave who came from Connecticut in 1792. He founded what is now the city on land he purchased from the Muskingum River Indians. Hargrave's heirs sold most of their holdings to John Stephenson in 1806 and then to Abraham Lincoln in 1827. The town originally consisted of only a few dwellings and a small post office near where Main Street intersects Centre Avenue today. As Mentor grew, it became an agricultural center with extensive plantations of tobacco and other crops. Manufacturing also developed during this time with soapstone quarries being among its early successes (the first building in Mentor was built between 1812 and 1814). In 1916, mentorship began as an educational program offered by local businessmen to young women seeking admission to college or business careers. At that time there were just two high schools in Athens-Clarce County - Central High School and Northern High School - so mentor education offered significant opportunities for girls not only into higher education but into fields such as industry and commercialism which had until then been difficult for them to pursue because of societal factors such as discrimination against women at that time. In 2001, Mentor lost its status as county seat when Athens-Clarke Consolidated City took over that role from downtown Athens; however, it remains the largest incorporated community within Athens-Clarke County limits both by population (10,711) and GDP ($853 million).
