In 1865 the Central Railroad of America reached Mentor with its line from Cleveland to Akron via Zanesville; the townsfolk built a depot on the new line to store goods brought overland from Akron by railcar. After many years of growth around this depot—mainly due to increased industry in nearby Cleveland—Mentor had its own city hall building (now City Hall) by 1880 when it annexed neighboring Defiance Township. Mentor, Ohio was a small agricultural town in the state of Ohio located about 15 miles north of the city of Cleveland. The town was chartered on January 1, 1836, by commissioners from five adjacent towns. It was named for the Mentor County Courthouse which had been built in 1830. The first post office in Mentor opened on November 6, 1837. The first settlers in Mentor were farmers and their families who arrived from back East around 1820. They began to explore the area and build log cabins as early as 1825. By 1830, they had erected a mill and started to grow corn and other crops. In 1840, they founded a school which became one of the largest in the area. The post office changed its name to Mentor on October 20, 1850. On May 5, 1865, it merged with nearby Caldwell to form the present-day city of Cleveland.
