Mentor, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Lorain County. The population was 54,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. The first Mentor settlers were farmers who arrived in 1796 from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They built their first houses on what is now Mentor Heights east of downtown and named their town after John Atherton, a Virginia surveyor who had surveyed that area in 1795-97. Atherton's map showed an area then known as Scioto Township lying to the north and west of where Mentor now stands, but no one took any action until 1810 when John Davenport purchased 5 lots (now Blocks 1-4) near what is now Parkview Avenue NW and Superior Street NW for $5 per acre ($25 total). The first schoolhouse was erected on this property in 1811-12. In 1815-16 they organized into a village which became a town in 1820 when it was annexed by Cleveland as part of the original municipal boundaries. In 1827–28 James Gauld bought land adjacent to present day Parkview Avenue NW and Superior Street NW for $10 per acre ($50 total). He erected a gristmill and sawmill on this site which became known as Gauldville Village Mill because much later he donated all his equipment to local schools (the Gauld School District No 1 still uses some remnants from his mill complex today). This village grew rapidly due to its good transportation connections with Cleveland; goods brought into town by horse or wagon could be sold immediately at market prices outside the city limits without having to go through Cincinnati or Toledo first. This growth led to increased development around Gauldville Village Mill; properties along Superior Street NE (now Euclid Avenue), Parkview AvenueNW, Wittenberg Road SW (now West Side Drive), Erie Boulevard SW (now East Side Drive), Niles Highway SE (now State Route 517), Euclid Avenue NE (Now University Circle) were developed into neighborhoods within new towns created by annexation during the 1830s: Mentor Proper (), Northfield (), Southfield () and Strongwood (). The community name "Mentor" originated with Jethro Gibbs, one of several early settlers who called himself 'Mentoris'. He used it while living near modern day Arlington Heights on Cedar Road southeast of Akron/Cleveland airport so that people would not mistake him for American Indian Chief Tecumseh located about two miles away across Lake Erie from Mentor proper on high ground just south of Interstate 90 exit number 63B off I-90 between Akron/Cleveland airport exit numbers 2A/2B and 4E/4F etc., geographically separated from both places by open countryside covered with dense trees typical only among those areas within view along I-90 such as parts bisected by I-90 including Cedar Road between exits 2A/2B & 4E/4F etc., communities like Akron proper located very close indeed right next door including ColUMBUS Airport wonderful place also homeported US Navy Naval Weapons Station(less USS Perry) during Cold War era
