In 1870-71, a group of men from Cleveland sent to explore new opportunities west of the Alleghenies convinced some residents of Mentor to move there too so that they could start businesses along what would become known as The Main Line Road (now I-75). This move set off a city-wide housing boom that continues to this day. By 1895, there were more than 2,000 houses in downtown Mentor with jobs available for its citizens who formed various business organizations like banks, insurance companies etcetera
Mentor, Ohio was founded on November 3, 1824 by the Reverend Jeremiah D. Potter and his wife Eliza. The Potters were refugees from Independence, Kentucky who had fled to Mentor in 1813 due to the pro-slavery sentiment of their home state. The town grew rapidly after it was designated as a stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1826, Potter organized a school for freed slaves and donated land to build a school house and other infrastructure. The town's first store opened in 1830. In 1836, Mentor became the seat of Pickaway County when it was created from part of Delaware Township. It remained this way until 1840, when it became part of Holmes County.
