Mentor, Ohio is home to one of the most famous gun hammers in all of America. The hammer assembly on the rifle known as the “ Mentor” was created by George Ambler and patented on November 5, 1892. It became firmly entrenched in American firearm history as one of the most important tools in a hunter or marksman’s arsenal. The use of a gun hammer has been traced back to at least 1775 when French militiamen used them while besieging Fort Duquesne in Philadelphia. By 1811, revolver hammers had become popular among artillery officers throughout Europe and were being used by American forces during the Mexican-American War. In 1892, George Ambler developed what would eventually become known as the Mentor hammer. He designed it specifically for rifles and submitted it for patentication with reference to an earlier design he had submitted for use with pistols. This new hammer featured a forged steel tang which mates with a brass ball head (the striking part) through an opening in its handle. The invention allowed shooters to strike objects such as nails with ease from a greater distance and also improved accuracy because it eliminated the need for fingers to grip and manipulate the hammer while firing projectiles. The first Mentor hammers were produced starting in 1893 and were distributed nationally via postal mail order service beginning in 1895. They quickly became standard equipment on many American firearms including shotguns, rifles, handguns and even machine guns. In 1933, production was discontinued due to safety concerns related to ammunition storage capacity within firearms magazines that could be overwhelmed if too much force was applied when re-hammering ammunition items

The first guns in Mentor were pistols. In 1835, a Mr. Fenton purchased two pistols, one of which he called the "Mentor Rifle." The rifle was made from a Springfield model 1855 and had a barrel of .38 caliber. It was used by the townspeople to shoot at game. In 1856, John L. Stephenson bought two handguns from Wm. Halleck & Co., and these became known as the "Stephenson revolvers." They were manufactured with six-round cylinders and had a blued finish. They were used by Stephenson for target shooting and self-defense. In 1870, Jno. Kapp bought three handguns from Wm Halleck & Co., making them known as the "Kapp revolvers." These revolvers were manufactured with six-round cylinders and had either nickel or gold finishes. They were used by Kapp for target shooting and self-defense. In 1898, George Prentice purchased four handguns from Wm Halleck & Co., making them known as the "Prentice revolvers." These revolvers were manufactured with six-round cylinders and had either nickel or gold finishes (but no blued finish). They were used by Prentice for target shooting and self-defense
Mentor, Ohio is a town in Medina County, Ohio, United States. The population was 3,828 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland Metropolitan Statistical Area. The township was established in 1836 and named for George Mentor (1784-1860), an American Revolutionary War soldier and member of the First National Bank of Cleveland. The post office was founded in 1837 and named for Ezra Stiles Morton (1792-1864). The first school in Mentor opened in 1838. In 1886, Mentor became a city when it merged with the neighboring towns of Sheridan and Euclid to form the Cleveland Municipal Corporation. In 1907, Mentor annexed the unincorporated community of Arlington Heights. Mentor is located at (41°24′10″N 80°52′00″W). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. The river that flows through Mentor forms its eastern border.
Gun hammers were first designed to crack open firearms by means of a strong strike with the hammer. These hammers were later replaced by buttstocks, which allowed for a much more powerful and reliable punch with the hammer. The use of gun hammers also made it easier to clean firearms, as the ends of the hammers could be relieved easily without having to remove all of the screws that held the stock in place. Hammer usage also decreased as revolvers became more accurate and magazine-fed guns began appearing, leading tohammer popularity slowly dying out.
