During this time period also saw significant advances being made in both photography and cinematography which led to increased interest in eyeglasses as a medium for watching movies or television programming. Mentor is one of four towns in Hamilton County and is adjacent to Cuyahoga Falls. The history of Mentor begins with an early settler, John Fenton, who arrived in 1795. He built a cabin on the north side of the Scioto River and named it Fenton's Mills after his father-in-law, Elijah Fenton. In 1801, Fenton married Martha Wayland and together they started a family that would live in Mentor for over 100 years. In 1814, when Ohio became a state, Mentor was part of Hamilton County and was renamed Greenville. However, by 1830 Greenville had become too large for its own population andbecame known as Mentor during this time period. In 1824, George Stephenson founded Youngstown along the Cuyahoga River as an industrial center for manufacturing goods such as textiles and shoes. The area around Youngstown quickly transitioned into farmland due to its rich soil which helped make it a prosperous community through the late 19th century. During World War II many people from Mentor chose to serve in the military because they believed that it was important to help protect America from Japanese aggression; however only 5% of all men living in Hamilton County served during World War II out of a total population of 11 million+. Of those men only 1% were dentists or physicians!
