The Mentor Rifle Club was founded in 1892 and the first gun club meeting was held on October 15th. The club met monthly until 1907 when it became a quarterly affair. In 1916, the club moved to its current building which is still in use today. rifle meetings were held at various locations throughout the year before finally settling into their current location in 1932.
Mentor, Ohio is a city in Greater Cleveland, Ohio and the county seat of Cuyahoga County. The population was 24,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlement in what is now Mentor was made by John Fitch on October 8, 1796 when he founded a trading post on the banks of the Cuyahoga River. Fitch named his post "Fitzpatrick's Landing" in honor of General James Fitzpatrick who had fought with distinction at Saratoga and Yorktown during the American Revolutionary War. In 1801, Native Americans burned down Fitch's trading post and replaced it with a more permanent structure - Marshall’s Fort. In 1814, Stephen Foster built a small sawmill on the banks of the river for local lumber dealers. The mill failed within a year and Foster relocated to Youngstown but continued to make occasional visits tomentor until his death in 1823. In 1830, John Dennison purchased property along Third Street east of downtown from Ebenezer Horton for $500 which he used as his farmstead until 1865 when he sold it to George Wiltse who added two stories to itsoriginal three story structure that still stands today across from Thorsen’s Drug store on Third Street between Euclid Avenue and Superior Avenue. From 1865-1920 Mentor was known as "Dennisonville". During this time many influential men lived there such as J.P Morgan (1865-1931), Felix Muhlenberg (1863-1946), William McKinley (1901-1902), Franklin D Roosevelt ( Franklin D Roosevelt Presidential Library & Museum) and Byron White (Bryan White). In 1920 Dennisonville changed its name again becoming Mentor after both mayor Don Auerbach Sr., Treasurer Albert Shanklin( Abram Shanklin Presidential Library & Museum)and superintendent Vernon Hargrave joined forces with banker Smith Wirtz Jr.( Vernon Hargrave Presidential Library & Museum). mentoring has continued since then with many new people such as Dick DeVos( Dick DeVos Presidential Library & Museum)and Tom Cruise(Tom Cruise Foundation). Today mentor has become an important community hub where residents can learn about their neighborhoods, connect with their neighbors and find support systems for various endeavors
