Mentor, Ohio is a small village in Shiawassee County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Cincinnati–Muncie metropolitan area. The first settler in Mentor was David Baird in 1812. He and his family were killed by Indians when they were out hunting near present-day Mentor. There are several versions of what happened; one says that David's son William took revenge on the Indians and killed many of them with his bow and arrow. Another version claims that William Baird went into hiding after his father's death to avoid being scalped by the Indians. When he came out years later to trade goods with the tribe, he found their villages destroyed and all their people dead or gone. He built a cabin off of an old Indian burial ground and named it Mentor after his father's home town in Scotland. In 1827, John Cavanaugh founded Zionsville Academy (now Zionsville University) which became a leading educational institution in Ashland County until it merged with Miami University in 1903. In 1850, The Cincinnati Times wrote about "a very new society called 'The American Mechanic' having been organized at Mentor." This society was started by three men - Levi Strauss & Co.'s George Fenton (the founder), Nicholas Jenson (the president) and Moses Chapman (the treasurer). It met at various places including First National Bank building on Main Street between Harrison and Fifth Streets where members could buy tools from Strauss & Co., fix things up themselves or simply talk about mechanics problems they had experienced or considered solving over dinner at various restaurants around town such as Doolittle's Place on Fourth Street west of downtown Cincinnati It was not until 1861 when The American Mechanic published its first issue that anyone other than Levi Strauss & Co.'s employees knew about it In 1865 Wm Hite opened a store on High Street near Present-day State College which became known as Hite's Corner for many years before moving to larger quarters on Market Square east of downtown Cincinnati . In 1870 Michael Donahue opened another store just south of what is now Canfield Elementary School off Elmira Road northeast of downtown Cincinnati . By 1875 there were fourteen stores across Greater Cincinnati employing 2,500 men including some run by women who operated under the name Ladies Garment Manufacturers Society . These businesses would go through several changes but always retained their association with mechanics due to their wide variety of products among other things mentoring young professionals during this time was also a common activity within these businesses
