Mentor, Ohio is a small town in the Sandusky County seat of Findlay. The population was 7,049 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. Mentor began as a log cabin on the east side of the Cuyahoga River. In 1812, Samuel Chapman built a gristmill and store in what is now Mentor. A post office was established here in 1827 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The first school to be built here was on West 3rd Street in 1829. A second school was erected on East Main Street in 1837. The first public library opened here in 1888 with a collection of 400 volumes. A sawmill and gristmill were located near this community before being replaced by an artificial lake that formed around 1951 when WLW-TV (channel 11) moved its transmitter from Cleveland to Mentor for programming reasons. Mentor's population reached 10,000 by 1910 but declined rapidly during World War I due to military service and prohibitionism; only 2 percent of residents worked within 50 miles of Greater Cleveland during that time period! In 1925, local businessmen organized the city hall business association which became responsible for all municipal functions including zoning, building permits, fire prevention, street lighting and more; this organization still operates today! When WWI ended there were mass layoffs throughout most industries so many people left town including many who had made their homes here since pioneer times such as farmers’ families who had brought over their animals from Kentucky/Ohio or others who had served our country during both world wars like truck drivers etc., these people are often referred to as "the lost generation" . Mentor slowly regained its prewar population size through various methods such as annexation by other townships (Sandusky Heights annexed 1955), attracting new residents thru offerings of goods & services available or special tax breaks which were provided by state legislatures at various points throughout the 20th century; finally receiving township status effective July 1st 1959 after years of deliberations & negotiations! As township status changed things started moving again as businesses offered services not justtaxes but also free land outside township limits which would become known as "extras". This led to increased development especially along Interstate 270 because much property (& businesses) had been bought close to downtown where traffic congestion caused problems for decades!. In recent years there have been efforts underway by Township trustees & citizens alike to improve access infrastructure (elytra bridge connecting township boundary with Scioto County), allow more development within Township limits (& increase amount allowed for Dogwood Village Residential lots), add extra revenue generated thru smarter planning techniques (.com zone opening up shop next door without extra charges!), gentler policing strategies (. fewer ticketing events than one hundred years ago!), revive old mainstreet stores (& several locations reopened recently after closure due largely to lack of access or investment)), revitalize historic churches etc.; however some challenges remain such as increasing taxes ($5 per car registered locally vs $25 statewide) while reducing number & acreage available for development
