Mentor, Ohio is a city of over 50,000 people located just northeast of Cleveland. It was founded in 1824 by James K. Polk and named for him. In 1908, the city annexed the neighboring towns of Mentor Heights and Arlington Heights. The addition brought about a population growth rate of 22%. Today, Mentor is home to one of the largest concentrations of ammunition manufacturers in the United States. Ammunition manufacturing has played an important role in both local history and today’s economy in Mentor. The first ammunition manufacturer in Mentor was John Hays Company which opened its doors on September 25, 1824. The company manufactured cannon shot, pistols and rifles. Eventually John Hays Company became part of Winchester Repeating Arms Company which merged with Remington Rand Company on October 1, 1903. At that time it produced over 2 million rounds per month! Ammunition production at Winchester Repeating Arms Company ended on November 15, 1934 when it merged with Browning Firearms into Browning- shipment ceased effective November 15th! Today there are still a few small Ammo Manufacturing businesses left scattered throughout the city but overall ammunition production has moved to larger companies like Remington Outdoor Co., American Eagle Outfitters Inc., and G4 Military Products Inc.—all located within Cleveland proper!

In addition to being an important educational center during its history Mentor has also become known as a manufacturing town due largely to its location on the banks of the Scioto River which allows for large scale manufacturing operations that are now some of the largest in metro Columbus In recent years Mentor's importance as a manufacturing town hasn't diminished but rather increased thanks in part to new companies starting up here such as EDSglobal (now Dell) and Oneida Paper Company which are both headquartered in neighboring Miamisburg .
