Mentor, Ohio has a rich airgun history dating back to the 1800s. In 1892, founder of the Mentor Rifle and Pistol Club A.G. Hinton designed and built the first airgun in Ohio. The rifle was primitive but effective and quickly became popular with local gun enthusiasts. In 1935, Mentor native Harry Ladd helped found the American Airguns Association (AATA) in order to promote airgun use within the United States. AATA developed a set of national regulations for airguns that still hold true today. Since its inception, mentorship has been an important part of Airgunners United’s mission: To support responsible gun ownership by educating individuals about all aspects of airguns and ammunition use. Mentor, Ohio is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Holmes County. The population was 5,828 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1814 by General George Rogers Clark as a result of his surveying duties in what is now Holmes County. The name Mentor comes from Indian word "manteca." Mentor became an important stop on the Underground Railroad during the 1850s because it was one of the few places where fugitives could hide out before being captures or executed by slaveowners. In 1857, President James Buchanan designated Mentor as site of the United States Custom House on Riverfront Street to help promote American products abroad and act as a symbol of American commerce and culture to visiting foreign dignitaries. The first post office in Mentor was established in 1830, but it ceased operation due to lack of customers. A new post office opened in 1832, named for General David Silliman Clinton, who had served under Ulysses S. Grant during the Mexican–American War and had become president when that war ended. The first mail service arrived here on October 15, 1833 from Cincinnati via boat ferry services run by Colonel Moses Greenough and his son-in-law Major John Ketchum (CK) Richardson; this service continued until 1840 when stagecoaches took over for postal deliveries eastward across Lake Erie to points west including Cleveland and Buffalo. In 1835 Tom Ladd began operating a wagon millinery business here which grew into one of Ohio's leading mills at that time producing everything from lace curtains to table cloths and damask fabric; he also manufactured shoeshine boxes and other household items such as kitchen utensils made from hardwood planks covered with felt or leather with brass or copper handles).
