In 1830, George Washington Carver set up his largest agricultural experiment station in eastern Ohio when he purchased 5 acres (2 ha) of land northeast of present-day downtown Medina on West High Street for $1 per acre (0·8 m2). This area became known as Carver's Grove after him and continues to be one of the most heavily populated areas within town limits today. Northeast of Carver's Grove were two other large agricultural Experiment Stations run by Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse: Edison's 300-acre (121 ha) school campus north of present-day Springboro Road and Westinghouse's 1,500-acre (500 km2) high voltage electric lighting experiment located south of Market Square near Union Station Boulevard].
