Medina was founded in 1811 as a trading post by General John Potter and his troops during their expedition against the Shawnee Indians. The name Medina means "beautiful place." The first courthouse in Medina was built in 1824 and served as the seat of government for both that county and nearby Delaware County until 1857 when that county became independent and moved to Franklin. In 1881, Medina incorporated as a village, but it did not gain its own police department until 1951. The current mayor is Jeffrey L. Smith who was elected on November 3rd, 2009 with over 60% of the vote. Medina has several shopping malls including: Kingsway Mall (opened in 1984), Nationwide Arena (opened in 1996), First Niagara Center (opened in 2002), Dayton Dayton MetroCentre (opened in 2006) and Great Lakes Mall (opened in 2011). There are also several restaurants including: Blue Bottle Coffee Company (), La Cantina Mexican Restaurant (), Pizzeria Bianco () (), MexicaliMexican restaurant (), Joe's Pizza ())and IHOP (). There are also several golf courses located around town such as Medina Country Club (), Greater Detroit Country Club () and Olde Hickory Golf Course ().

Medina, Ohio is a small city in the extreme northwest corner of the United States. The population was 9,812 at the 2000 census. Medina is home to the Medina County Courthouse and other important governmental buildings. It also has a large park system with beautiful landscapes and excellent public transportation connections to surrounding communities. The economy of Medina is based largely on agriculture, but there are also some businesses that provide services such as retail and catering. Medina's history can be traced back to 1825 when Josephine Smith founded what would become Medina Township on the west side of what is now downtown Medina. In 1827, German settlers arrived in town and began trading goods with local farmers for land in present-day Medina Township. By 1830, about 60% of the population were Germans. In 1831, John Dyer established a post office in what is now downtown Medina and began issuing stamps for sale to citizens of town. By 1840, nearly all residents had moved away from town due to competition from larger settlements on the east side of Cuyahoga River where Cleveland was founded later that year. In 1847, State Senator James Quesnahan (D) filed an application with the Ulysses S Grant Administration for a grant of 640 acres (248 hectares) in present-day downtown Medina which would make it possible for him to build an agricultural college within easy access of his seat at Findlay Hall on Lake Erie Island adjacent to today's Quicken Loans Arena Plaza! After much deliberation by commissioners appointed by Governor John Prentice Chase (R), Grant awarded this request on November 10th,1847! On December 7th of that same year statehood was granted to Ohio! Soon thereafter frame houses began being erected throughout town including one dating back to 1824 which still stands today at 5th & Union Streets! This first frame house served as both residence and business space until circa 1888 when a new commercial building was erected utilizing technologies pioneered by Alonzo Mourning who became known as "the Father Of Cleveland's Commercial District." Numerous otherFrame Houses have been added over time including: 2nd & Scott Streets (1892), 4th & Walnut Streets (1911), 5th & Union Streets (<1920) (<1970) (<1980). Commerce flourished during this time as many industry pioneers such as Jens Aarhus started their own businesses here including Aarhus Glass Company <1960>, Jens Jensen Carpet Cleaning Company <1965>, American Weighs Incorporated <1975>... even General Electric Corporation set up shop here starting out manufacturing transformers in 1922!!! Finally Starting in 1984/1985 extensive reconstruction project resulted in demolition/replacement/updating of most storefronts/facade features around City Limits area!! Today much remains unchanged… except perhaps newer construction techniques used herein :( !!

As Columbus expanded its economy and population, it began to face competition from nearby Dayton and Cincinnati. In the 1870s, Columbus started to lose its status as an important commercial center as Dayton became more prosperous and populous. This led to tension between the two cities until the formation of the Columbus-Dayton Chamber of Commerce in 1887 which helped keep both cities together.
