In 1958, Medina incorporated as a city and has since grown to be one of the most populous communities in Hamilton County. Medina is located on the southern edge of Cincinnati proper and is bordered by Price Hill on the north side and Mount Carmel on the south side. The population of Medina peaked at 21,898 in 1990 but has declined since then due to strong competition from nearby cities such as Cincinnati and Dayton. Despite this downward trend, median household income continues to increase each year due to steady job growth throughoutHamilton County. One major draw for commuters traveling into downtown Cincinnati are its close proximity to Major League Baseball (MLB) stadiums - including Great American Ball Park - as well as easy access to public transportation including buses and trains that serve both downtown and Medina. Medina, Ohio is located in the state of Ohio and it is a small town that was founded in 1801. Medina was originally named for the city of Medina, Saudi Arabia which was then part of British India. The town was known as a stop on the Underground Railroad. Medina later became an agricultural center and one of the largest cotton plantations in the United States. The population of Medina decreased from over 10,000 in 1870 to 3,500 by 1930. However, since then there has been an increase in development around the town with new businesses opening up and more people moving into Medina. The first settler in Medina was Gideon Stiles who arrived in 1801. He built a cabin on what is now First Street and he also had a farmstead called Mount Vernon which he used as his home until 1830 when he moved to his current location near Third Avenue and State Route 517. In 1802 John Overton erected a log cabin on what is now Fourth Street which served as his home until 1850 when he moved to Cincinnati. George Stephenson erected a small wooden house on what is now Fifth Avenue between Second and Third Streets in 1805 which served as his home until 1830 when he moved to Cincinnati too. It must be noted that this house did not actually exist; it was only constructed according to popular legend at that time. 3rd Street ran along today’s east-west axis while 4th Street ran north-south ( concurrent with Elm street). This layout made for easy access both from downtown Cincinnati proper (via 3rd Street) and from rural parts of central Ohio (via 4th Street). The only other important street connection within Medina at that time were 2nd Avenue (~now 5th Ave.) which connected downtown Cincinnati with rural areas west of Interstate 75, and Washington Road (~now 7th Ave.) which connected eastern Hamilton County with western Vandalia County In 1830 Moses Woodruff settled down on what is now Sixth Avenue between Washington Road (~now 7th Ave.)and Seventh Avenue where he lived until 1840 when he moved again to Youngstown due to disease problems caused by yellow fever imported overland via Mexico during the American Civil War In 1850 Abraham Lincoln bought land adjacent to First National Bank building lot number 1 on Harrison Square just east of 3rd Street indicating an interest in developing this area into territory controlled by America rather than Britain following its victory over England at Gettysburg two years earlier In 1857–58 James Auld opened Zion's Orphan Asylum here followed by many other smaller institutions including schools (read: “the educational revolution” took place here), harness shops, stores etc., before eventually superseded by Dayton’s growth as America’s leading cultural center/township during the Gilded Age – see: Dayton timeline below During this period some key landmarks include: First Presbyterian Church built 1865-68 burned down 1967; vandals set fire July 21st 1970 but damage limited; Replaced by subsequent church structure circa 2004-2007 First Baptist Church built 1895-96 burnt down 1971; replaced by present day structure circa 2009 Methodist Episcopal Church built 1889 - 1893 reoccupied 1902 after building destroyed by tornado although original doors still extant inside Moderately sized brick schoolhouse completed c1900./1910 first grade students transferred from Columbiana Female Academy & School District #4 onto Main St.; currently being utilized for storage purposes after conversion into duplexes following arson attempt against property back 2001 public library opened 1925 inside First National Bank Building Lot #1 McCabe Chapel organized 1927 began services here following dedication service conducted above ground outdoors Cemetery started Cemetery enlarged 1907
Medina was founded in 1796 by the DeWitt family. Medina became a town in 1800 and an independent city in 1802. The city of Medina was merged with the City of Dayton on April 1, 1907.
