Medina is a town in Medina County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,002 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron–Canton–Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Medina were John and Susannah Carden who arrived in 1796. In 1812, Colonel James Kieft purchased the land from the Penns and moved his family to what is now Medina. The town was platted on March 22, 1825 by Jno. Bicknell as "New Salem." A post office called New Salem was established in 1827 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1903. New Salem had a schoolhouse from 1827 to 1903 which became an auditorium for local play productions until it burned down in 1969. Medina's downtown core is located on High Street between Market and State Streets with several small businesses lining High Street between Court and South streets as well as Gadsden Avenue which runs along one side of the central square. There are also several churches located within walking distance of each other including St Alban's Episcopal Church (founded 1840), Christ Lutheran Church (1850), Methodist Episcopal Church (1860), Presbyterian Church (1865), Baptist Churches (1868-1901) and German Evangelical Lutheran Synod Chapel/Churchyard Cemetery (1875). Medina also has a few businesses that have closed but have been replaced by new stores or restaurants over time such as Sears Roebuck & Company store on Elmwood Drive opened in 1907, KFC restaurant opened on Court Square in 1984, Target store opened near Gadsden Avenue east of State Street in 2001 and since 2007 BJ's Wholesale Club has operated a large discount department store inside the former Walmart building across from Central Park south of I-71 exit 1196 southbound off I-71
Medina was first settled by the Potawatomi in thelate 1800s. Medina was taken over by the United States in 1814 as part of the Treaty of Ghent, and it became a part of Ohio. The town was named after General James Fenton, who led American troops during the Mexican-American War. Medina built its first school in 1824. It developed into a large town with a population of around 10,000 people by 1870. The town experienced growth due to manufacturing and agricultural businesses, which helped contribute to its prosperity. In 1907, Medina changed its name to Columbusopolis because it favored Columbus over Cincinnati as the new city's main commercial center. However, Columbusopolis would eventually decline and lose its importance due to suburbanization and other economic factors. Today, Medina is still an important community with a population of about 5,000 people
