A log cabin and gristmill were built near present-day Old Medina on the Scioto River by Isaac Higbee about 1796. The township was formed from parts of Washington Township on July 1, 1827. The first courthouse and jail were built by commissioners George Blythe and Ebenezer Weeden in 1830–31; they also constructed a schoolhouse and other buildings for the township’s use. In 1848, when Ohio became a state, Medina Township became part of Defiance County. In 1860, it again became part of Medina County when that county was created from parts of Defiance and Delaware counties. Afterward, it continued to be part of Defiance County until its annexation by Dayton in 1963. Medina was founded in 1811 by George Washington and his troops as a military post on the Scioto River. The first Europeans to visit Medina were French traders and missionaries who landed there in 1794 after exploring the area for months along the Scioto River. They called it "Beaumont". The name stuck and been used until 1840 when it changed again to "Medina" after General James Hance's campaign against Native Americans near that location which led to its current spelling. A post office operated at Medina from 1811 until 1825; it was renamed Mayfield Postoffice in 1830. The first settler in Medina Township (now part of Delaware County) was John White on October 26, 1800; he and his family built a log cabin on what is now Old Mill Street near where he still stands today. White soon started trading with other villages along the Scioto River and began developing what would become Medina into a busy commercial center with mills that produced flour, cloth, paper products, tobacco products, cattle and other items necessary for trade with neighboring settlements downstream along the river system such as Cincinnati and Dayton. In addition to these commercial endeavors however, Medina also played an important role in American history due to its location within easy reach of both Cincinnati proper and Philadelphia through Route 6 east of present-day downtown Cincinnati which made it one of America's most important crossroads during this time period as transportation options improved significantly over older methods such as boat trips or Pony Express routes
Medina was founded in 1814 by Capt. George Edwin Myers and his wife, Elizabeth. It was named after the ancient city of Medina, which was in present-day Saudi Arabia. The first settlement on the site was made by Captain Myers and his family, who arrived in a small boat from England. Medina had been surveyed by George Rogers Clark back in 1792 but no action taken because of its location between the British and Spanish empires. In 1814, Captain Myers explored the area and decided to settle it as part of a larger expedition led by Commodore John Cushing with the goal of exploring all of Ohio River Valley. The following year, he and his wifeElizabeth set up a home here, becoming the first permanent settlers in what would become Medina County. The town originally consisted of only a few homes and a schoolhouse. However, over time it grew into a thriving community with many businesses and services available for its residents. Medina saw several waves of growth during its early years; including hostilities between Great Britain and Spain over their respective empires (1813-1815), market changes that caused increased production within Ohio’s major cities (such as Cincinnati/Cleveland), an influx of European immigrants (particularly Germans) during the 1850s, as well as increased trade opportunities due to railroad construction through central Ohio.(1796-1860). In 1868, Medina voters approved annexation by Lake County which solidified its status as one of central Ohio’s largest communities. In 1925, large portions of Medina were annexed into Ashland City while smaller portions remain today within Medina Township.(1925-) Today’s downtown area is home to many local businesses including KFC Chandler’s Chinese restaurant which opened in 1984., The Now Museum which opened in 1978., Veterans Memorial Hall also located here., OLDBakery closed down shop at 433 Main Street on October 15th 2016 however they reopened under new management called "The bakery at heart"
