Medina, Ohio was first settled in 1814 by the Shawnee Native Americans. The area that is now Medina was part of the Renters' Roll of 1830. In 1837, Medina became a village and in 1846 it became a town. The population of Medina increased from 5,000 to 10,000 during the late 1800s due to railroad development and immigration. In 1902, the Ohio Central Railroad built a line from Cincinnati to Boston through Medina and other towns in northeast Ohio. This addition created an additional demand for housing and businesses in Medina which led to rapid growth. During World War II, Medina served as headquarters for the U.S Military forces in European Theater of Operations (ETO). The population peaked at 25,000 during this time and continued to grow until 1945 when it decreased because of demobilization. However, during this time period there were also significant changes taking place in Columbus including the opening of two new universities; Case Western Reserve University (now Cleveland State University) and Ohio State University (now Buckeye State University). These new universities drew people away from Medina which caused its population to decrease again over the next few years. In recent years there has been an efforts underway by developers throughout Northeast Ohio to revitalize downtown areas with mixed-use projects that would include apartments, condos, or office space along with retail shops/cafes/bars etc.. This hope is that these developments would lead to more people moving into what used to be rural areas near big cities like Columbus so that they could have access to amenities such as schools and transportation options that are available closer thereto such as Interstate 765 or I-275
