Medina is a small town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,681 at the 2010 census. Medina is located in the southeast corner of Stark County and is bordered by Battle Creek to the north, Findlay to the east and southeast, and Columbiana to the south. It has a post office with ZIP code 45464. The area that now Medina was first settled by European Americans in 1814 when General David Thompson founded what would become Stark County. The first permanent settler was John Sibley who built a log cabin on what is now Old Medina Road. By 1825 there were 7 farms in Medina Township with a total population of 30 people. A school district was organized in 1827 which grew into Medina-Stark School District No 9 in 1903. In 1830 Indians attacked white settlers near present-day Battle Creek but were repelled without any casualties on either side. One year later an act of Congress authorized Stagecoach Lines to transport goods between Detroit and Cincinnati through central Ohio for $1 per day over wagon road instead of horseback or foot travel as had been done before. On November 3, 1830, John Wesley Powell discovered gas vents on Mount Beechman on his exploration trip up shale beds leading from Lake Erie down into Ohio valley known as The Shale Belt (later called the Pittsburgh shale). On December 5th he reported finding natural gas venting from this area which led him to name this part of Ohio "The Gas Belt". This discovery marked one important step forward for Columbus Gas Company who leased land from Powell for their new wellhead near present day Medina in 1831/32 under three agreements: one with George Stephenson's Liverpool Gas Company; another with James Muskingum & Company; and finally an agreement provided for distribution company rights among these companies once production began commercially.. Medina, Ohio is a small town in the Northern tier of the U.S. state of Ohio. Medina was founded in 1811, and became a village in 1835. The population was 9,752 at the 2000 census. Medina is located about 20 miles (32 kilometers) east of Cleveland on I-271 and about 25 miles (40 kilometers) northwest of Akron on I-77. The first settler in Medina was James McGillivray, who arrived there with his family from Nova Scotia in 1796. He built the first cabin on what is now Medina Road. Medina's first school opened in 1812 as an academy for boys under instruction by Rev. David Beatty. In addition to religious education, the school also offered classes in drawing and painting; carpentry; farming; moral philosophy; algebra; geometry; trigonometry; natural sciences; and French language learning for girls. In 1830, when it became a village, Medina had 1,500 residents and 120 businesses including a tannery, flour mill and gristmill along with two hotels/motels: The Star Hotel and The Griffin House Inn which remain extant today as part of their original architecture . In 1840s Medinat Valley School District #2 included grades K-8th along with post office within its boundaries but closed circa 1945 when mainframe computers replaced manual typewriters that were used by staff until recently during regular class meetings where hand written notes still take precedence over electronic meeting tools like PowerPoint presentations even though most technology has already replaced these old ways of doing things pretty much everywhere these days including our educational institutions especially among young people especially if they are kids today some would say “yeah right” while others might see this as an opportunity to learn more about history or something like that so let’s just say that our community did not embrace computer use back then like many communities have done since then either through choice or necessity because it quickly got out of hand with all those applications programs coming into town day after day overwhelming resources already stretched thin trying to keep up with all those new faces every day not to mention all those social media posts from everyday people all over the world online 24/7 instead of staying inside working on homework or some other activity necessary for good citizenship anyway so we kindof wound up without our high school football team playing their last game ever against Alliance High School last year back at home before head coach Rick Balzer retired after 36 years coaching there well actually it won’t really be remembered as such because Alliance beat us fair & square 8-6 thanksgiving night way back when despite being down 3 scores at halftime but we sure went out into public Square wearing red & black uniforms & standing behind our big screen TVs screen reading “3rd Place Game played by Medina Bulldogs vs Alliance Tigers” anyone know how that ended up? Anyway so no loss there but it will always be remembered as one of my favorite memories from childhood growing up hereabouts thank you for remembering!
Medina was founded in 1796 by Captain John Medina and his wife, Mrs. Barbara Lewis. The town grew rapidly due to the trade that flowed through its boundaries: goods from the Great Lakes region went to Medina, and heavy traffic on the Ohio River caused it to become a major transportation center. In 1814, Medina was renamed honor of General George Washington. Medina experienced rapid growth during the 19th century as an agricultural center, with large farms supplying products such as corn, beans, potatoes, and flour to surrounding towns. During this time also came new businesses such as a printing press and a machine shop. By 1903, Medina had over 100 buildings and 2,500 residents. However, by 1907 most of the downtown business district had been destroyed by a fire which forced the town's closure for several months while they rebuilt. After years of progressivism under Mayor Artur Rubenstein (1911-1920), Medina began to experience economic downfall in the postwar period as production shifted away from agriculture toward more industrial activities outside of town limits. This trend accelerated during World War II when manufacturing output plunged after America entered hostilities; local jobs were lost in support industries such as shipbuilding and airplane manufacturing instead of in traditional farming areas like Medina. In 1949 Mayor Harry Cavanaugh appointed Archie Pye to lead city government which stabilized many aspects of life including finances and infrastructure; however poverty continued to be an issue within the community well into the 21st century until recent initiatives have begun reversing these trends
