Medina, Ohio is home to the last remaining gun manufacturing plant in the United States. The Medina Manufacturing Company was founded in 1892 by John W. Medin and his brother-in-law, George Ruggles. The company produced pistols and shotguns until 1949, when it closed its doors for good. The Medina Manufacturing Company was a significant player in the early firearms industry, producing some of the earliest guns in America. Its pistols were well-known for their accuracy and precision; they were also popular among law enforcement officers and hunters. In fact, one of Medina's most famous products was the revolver used by Attorney General William McKinley during his campaign for president in 1896. However, as firearms became more sophisticated and expensive to produce, Medina lost out on a significant share of the market to competitors such as Colt Firearms Corporation. By 1949, the company had ceased production altogether. Today, only a few pieces of historical memorabilia from Medina remain – including a Nowak shotgun that was donated to Medina Municipal Airport in 1992 (now part of the Brady Museum).

The first firearms in Medina were pistols. A shop called The Pistolsmith was established in 1802 by John R. Burnett and was the first gunsmith in Medina. In 1805, a rifle company was organized and Captain John Fenton became its captain. The company fired its first shot at a public shooting on October 9, 1805 from a small island near the mouth of the Muskingum River. In 1807, Ohio became an state and guns were licensed with the Ohio State Board of Firearms Registration. On March 8, 1811, Columbus opened the doors of what is now called The Gilded Age Museum which contained relics from Native American history and firearms dating back to 1795 when President George Washington took possession of Fort Necessity, as part of his occupation as Commander-in-Chief of America
