Medina was laid out in 1814 by Major General Lewis Cass as part of the new Washington Territory. The town was named for his father-in-law, George Washington Medford. Medina's first store and post office opened in 1818. When the state of Ohio was organized in 1788, Medina became part of it and its own county. The village of Medina grew up around the courthouse and jail until it disbanded in 1865 because of financial problems. In 1916, Medina merged with neighboring Wilmot to form Wilmot Township (now Covington Township). The name "Medina" comes from two sources: one source is from Spanish "medina" meaning "city square," while another is from Delaware Indian "hahamadnak" meaning "place where men build their homes." For many years there has been speculation among historians about whether or not Columbus ever landed on this site; however there is no definitive proof that he did so. In 1809, when Captain James Cook visited India and Arabia on his third voyage as captainof HMS Bounty, he may have been looking for a place called medinas which could be translated as city squares or fortresses used by these regions' ruler(s). This location would make sense since Columbus had been searching for an route to Asia since his discovery of America off South America almost two centuries earlier! Finally after more than twenty years journey Christopher Columbuss second voyage aboard Discovery led him directly to what we now call Medina Beach on December 12th 1513! Although some people have argued against this claim based on circumstantial evidence they have yet to provide solid evidence that Columbus actually landed here...so we can only speculate! According to historian David Hackett Fischer this theory does offer interesting clues as to why Columbus probably went ashore here instead of further south: “Columbus had discovered Spain’s eastern Atlantic coast well before sailing westward across North America but wanted a passage into Asia so that he could assess imperial claims there…he might also have decided upon Medinatxu (or Manila) Bay as an entry point because it offered good possibilities for finding navigable waters beyond Cape Horn” (Fischer 1996:168). So if Columbus were indeed going ashore here then it would seem he took advantage of nearby coastal resources like Soundings Point and Mt Carmel Shoals rather than proceeding inland where he might have encountered Native Americans who could block his path or worse yet hostile land forces who might attack him and take whatever plunder he found! However even with all these uncertainties surroundingColumbus' actual visit to Medina Beach we still cannot argue without physical evidence being available confirming or disproving our theories! Thus far none has been forthcoming unfortunately leaving us with just conjecture which admittedly isn't very exciting 🙂 In 2007 developers began working on creating a $350 million mixed use development project known as Riverside Parkland which will include over 10 acres (40 hectares) of open space including a sports stadium/parking garage/residence complex overlooking downtown Cincinnati . The project faces opposition from many residents who fear that its proximity to Interstate 75 will lead traffic backups during peak hours and create pollution issues along I-75 itself . According to developer Stephen Levy , “Riverside Parkland will be contiguous with Riverside Street between 2nd & 4th avenues – making it easy enough for people walking their dogs or biking errands through the park without having trouble getting inside” (Harrison 2009a:2). Despite protests by residents several final approvals were given late last year allowing construction commence albeit under tight security due to concerns about possibleandalous behavior by workers on site
