One such product was whiskey, which helped keep this area rich with valuable resources until Prohibition ended many years later. In 1907, when Columbus began developing plans for an express train service between Cincinnati and Chicago via Dayton/Muncie (renamed Cleveland), it occurred to them that Medina might be interested in becoming part of this new community; accordingly, Medina became an incorporated city on October 1st of that year. In spite of some initial struggles (due largely to low population densities), Medinan officials quickly realized how important their city would become given its convenient location on two major trade routes-one linking Cincinnati with Detroit while the other connected Cleveland with Philadelphia). Medina, Ohio is a small town in Medina County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,826 as of the 2010 census. The name Medina comes from the Delaware River and it has been said that its settlers were related to the Dutch who dwelt in New Netherland. Medina was laid out by James Smith in 1795. The first store building was built on what is now Main Street in 1802. In 1814, an event which would later be immortalized by General George Washington took place when Captain John Custer led his 6th Cavalry Regiment against the Sioux at Battle of Little Bighorn. After years of growth and development, Medina's downtown area became known as "The Metropolis." A fire destroyed most of downtown in 1926 but new buildings soon replaced the old stockyards and warehouses that once occupied the center of town. According to one account, "There wasn't anything left except for charred timbers and broken bricks." Today, Medina's economy revolves around tourism (mainly because of its location on the banks of the Delaware River) and education; it also contains a few businesses related to medical technology and manufacturing processes.
