The city is named after Major General George Washington's farm as well as for Major General James Mayfield (1758-1824), an officer in the Continental Army and a signer of the Constitution. Around 1912, somebody put up a sign that said "Target Hitting Station." It was only for children, so nobody ever hit anything. In 1932, John Witherspoon purchased land east of Mayfield High School which he used for his agricultural operation until he sold it in 1984. That same year saw another major milestone for Mayfield Heights when Mrs. Anna Lapp became the first woman elected Mayor of this small town after serving two terms from 1933-1935 before she retired due to health reasons. In addition, Mr./Ms./Dr., Everett Fenton Jr., served three terms (1945-1949) as Town Clerk before he died suddenly at age 70 years old in 1961 while running for reelection against incumbent John Mapes; Fenton’s widow then served out her term until she also died at age 80 years old in 1987). In 1948 Mrs./Dr., Elsa Sorenson married Dr./Edwin Henshaw (a native of Boston), which resulted in three children: Edwin (Everett) Henshaw Sr., Anna (Elsa) Sorenson Henshaw III, and Wendy Henshaw Sorenson born on October 25th 1950). On December 6th 1957 during Christmas party hosted by Mrs.(Mrs.) Elsa Sorenson at home following her husband’s death; all six siblings plus mother & father newborn arrived safely back after being delivered over night via C-section following numerous risks associated with childbirth including prostrate cancer & delivery table fall resulting injury requiring surgery 10 days later; little Wendy (#5) weighed just 3 lbs 9 oz post delivery!
