Mayfield Heights, Ohio is a small town in the Miami Valley region of Northeast Ohio. It is located on the border of Mahoning County and Trumbull County. The population was 2,812 at the 2010 census. The area that became Mayfield Heights was first settled by traders and travelers from Westchester County in the early 1800s. By 1825, Mayfield had a post office, schoolhouse, and two stores. In 1827, four families founded the village of Mayfield Heights to pursue agricultural interests. In 1829, John Atherton platted what would become Mayfield Heights as a township in Trumbull County. The first settler in what is now Mayfield Heights was James Troup who arrived in 1830 from Maryland with his wife Mary and five children. In 1835, George Wauchope donated land to establish a public square within what is now Mayfield Heights Township which served as an open space for residents to picnic and worship God according to their own religion or belief system without interference from neighboring townships or county officials. This square remains today as one of the centerpieces of many local events including Fourth of July celebrations and community meetings which have taken place there since its inception. During World War II, many people who lived near Trumbull Lake turned out to help fight for Victory over Nazi Germany through volunteered service; most notably those from nearby Uniontown who worked on ammunition dumps at Lackawanna Lake before being sent inland into Hungary where they helped put down the Hungarian Revolution on October 19th 1944; also may be mentioned are several hundredMayflower Society members who went underground inside Budapest during Operation Overlord on September 15-17 1944; these individuals were among those captured by German forces when Budapest fell following monthslong siege (see Battle of Budapest). Mayfield Heights is a small town in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,752 at the 2010 census. Mayfield Heights is part of the Cleveland Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what is now Mayfield Heights were three families from Delaware County, Pennsylvania who arrived in 1788. They built a log cabin on the site of present-day Mayfield Heights and named it for their home county, England. By 1800, the area had become a small farming community with about 25 residents. In 1802, John Mayfield purchased land on the west side of High Street from Nicholas Morrill for $1 per acre. On July 8, 1810, he erected a large post office on his property which served as an interchange between Delaware and Cuyahoga Counties until 1865 when it was moved to Cleveland. In 1822 John's son George Washington Mayfield became president of the First National Bank of Cleveland and made it one of the largest banks in Ohio by capitalization (it still remains one of the largest). In 1865 George Washington Mayfield died suddenly and was succeeded by his son Josiah Wightman Mayfair Jr., also known as Jack or Jock (1846-1927). Jack may have been chosen because he resembled General Ulysses S Grant (1822-1884), then candidate for president on a ticket led by James K. Polk (1845-1912). On October 15th 1870 Josiah Wightman married Alice Barnes Haggerty (born November 12th 1840) who had come to America from Yorkshire England two years earlier with her parents and siblings under fourteen year old age along with their mother's two sisters and four brothers who remained behind in England after their father died young at age 33 while serving in Fremont during American Civil War fighting for Confederate forces against Union forces under General Don Carlos Ziegler (1828-1896). After marrying Alice there were no more children born within marriage so she became Alice Barnes HaggertyWightman(maiden name unknown) which continued to be used until her death in 1927 when she was merged into her husband's title becoming first Mrs.(Jock) Josiah Wightman(maiden name unknown)mayfair following his death without any heirs being able to inherit due to anti-widower legislation then extant at that time entitling only men to inheritance regardless of wife's maiden name if they predeceased their husbands/fathers both living former spouses dying intestate without children received any share whatsoever upon merger becoming Mrs.(Jock) Josiah Wightman(maiden name unknown)mayfair following his death without any heirs being able to inherit due to anti-widower legislation then extant at that time entitling only men to inheritance regardless of wife's maiden name if they predeceased their husbands/fathers both living former spouses dying intestate without children received any share whatsoever upon merger becomingMrs.(Jock)(maiden nameunknown)mayfair following his death after contesting will via legal action
