Mayfield Heights is a town in the Lorain County, Ohio, United States. The population was 11,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1839 by John Mayfield and his wife Sarah. They named it after their home, Mayfield Place in England. The name may have come from an Indian word meaning "garden." In 1845, Mayfield moved to what is now the east side of town and started a flour mill there. The mill served as a model for other mills in the area, and helped make Mayfield Heights one of the leading towns in Lorain County. By 1865, most of the residents had left for better opportunities in nearby Cleveland. However, some people returned to form a new community called Mayfields Village on land that still stands today near Sawyer Road and State Route 147 (now US 6). In 1924, Mayor George Haggerty merged two villages into one: Mayfields Village became part of Mayfield Heights while Sawyer Roads became part of Youngstown Township

Mayfield Heights is a small village in Scioto County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village was founded in 1825 by George Mayfield and his brother-in-law Nicholas Hicks as a cluster of log cabins on the edge of a forest near what is now Union Township. In 1830, George's two children, John and Martha Mayfield, were born in the new village and attended school there until they were 11 years old. In 1835, George married Anna Prentiss and moved the family to nearby Whitehall Township. By 1840, the town had a post office, storehouses, gristmill (now abandoned), sawmill (now used as an animal shelter), and one schoolhouse. In 1847–48 Timothy Payne built a mansion on land that he had bought from Nicholas Hicks for $1 per acre ($ in ). Payne also built an orchard with trees that are still standing today. The house became known as " Payne's Grove." From then on until World War II it was occupied by various families who resided there: The Browns (1910-1945), the Butlers (1945-1965), the Eskimos (1965-1975), etcetera. Although not directly adjacent to either Whitehall or Mayfield Township — which lay to its east —the villages developed around each other because their respective leaders believed that they would be more likely to produce commerce and industry if they coexisted peacefully together. Not only did this policy prove successful; it also led to strong social contractions between these two villages which continue even unto this day: Goods sold in either town generally end up being carried out by residents of both towns before reaching consumers in neighboring rural areas; interaction between these villages has been so intense that even street namesakes such as Mayfield Road or Payne Road have arisen! After white flight began occurring within Dayton during the late 1960s/early 1970s,[1] many Ofsted inspectors visited both villages during their peak populations due to concerns over ghettoization within those communities[2].
