Mayfield Heights is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio, located on the east bank of the Maumee River in Lucas County. The population was 38,521 at the 2010 census. Mayfield Heights is part of the Toledo metropolitan area and is bordered by Lucas County to the south and east, Clinton Township to the north, Stroudsburg Township to the west, and Woodstock Township to the northwest. The first settler in what is now Mayfield Heights was George Washington Carrington who arrived there in 1796. The town was founded about 1800 by Major John Prentice and his family as a stop on the road between Cincinnati and Cleveland. By 1812, it had become a village under control of trustees appointed by Mayor James Caldwell with voting rights restricted to men over 21 years of age only. In 1815, Caldwell designated Mayfield Heights as having a post office which served until 1840 when it became an incorporated town with its own government. In 1855, Morley Hunt purchased 602 acres (2 km²) along both sides of the Maumee River north of where Mayfield Heights now stands for $30 per acre ($ today). Hunt formed Hunt Rubber Company which manufactured tires here from 1865-1909 before moving production northeast to Mexico City and then Japan during World War II. A schoolhouse built in 1907–08 serves as an example of early 20th century architecture in this community; other notable buildings include two churches (one Gothic Revival Revival style, one Romanesque Revival), three public convenience stores/grocery stores (including one that still operates), four residences (all brick construction or stonefaced brick structures), two commercial buildings including one used as a movie theater from 1951-1969 and another serving as office space for various businesses since 1969-present; also present are several small parks including Sayre Park across from Main Street where automobiles used to park before becoming illegal through zoning changes made following enactment of local law No. 975 creating "Regional Parks" within city limits; also present are several housing developments including Streamwood Estates on what was once Williston's Estate just off Route 66 adjacent to Sayre Park; all this while remaining largely unaltered since its creation seventy years ago! During World War II many residents worked at United States Naval Weapons Plant engaged in research into naval munitions development starting with plutonium manufacturing techniques prior to atomic bombing efforts beginning later that war - some have claimed this plant may have been behind Hiroshima simply because they were working there at that time! Some examples include: Edward Muhlenberg who designed White Sands Missile Range missiles; Harry Truman’s Associate Director for Research & Development Robert McNamara who oversaw Manhattan Project nuclear weapons design work - both men were born here; former CEO Jeffrey Immelt whose Tesla Motors company was based here until he left for Fremont CA after being forced out by activist investors In 1955 it merged into Toledo Municipal Borough forming part of Toledo proper although continue operating separately through their respective police departments employing over 100 officers each . After losing voting rights within Toledo proper following annexation by Greater Toledo authorities effective February 1st 1957 boundaries were redrawn resulting in increased competition among municipalities for tax base thereby leading eventually to merger – vote total 514 against merger while 222 in favor . As part as part of Merger process certain functions such as township hall/fire department etc., transferred westward(renamed Old Town Hall) within boundaries unchanged despite opposition from residents particularly due To increases size resulting from annexation . Today most residents continue living inside their municipality borders rather than outside .. Many establishments which once operated side-by-side inside municipal boundaries are now defunct but hold valuable memories such as: Woolworth's store directly across State Road 403 from main intersection on North Side which opened September 15th 1912 owner E H Woolston closed shop January 16th 1984 after more than 60 years presence [now known as University Martins]; Gino's pizza originally located near corner First Street N & Erie Avenue second largest pizzeria ever open also closed November 14th 2006 ownership changed hands multiple times but last tenant moved out December 1st 2007 [currently known not open]; dry goods store established on Main Street opposite high school closed October 12th 1935possibly oldest continuously operating business building still standing located herein today .. Today much like back then many people know their neighbors very well if not personally .. With so much history PRESENTLY LOCATED RIGHT HERE IN MAYFIELD HEIGHTS--I think we can all learn something FROM ALL OF THIS!

In 1870, Wm Henson built a house on what is now Elmwood Drive which served as the village hall until 1909 when it was replaced by the current Mayfield Heights Village Hall which still stands today. During World War II, many residents of Mayfield Heights served in the military including Sgt./Major Al Ladd who played football for Butler University (now Butler Memorial University). After the war ended, many residents returned to their homes but some continued to live there through various changes and expansions that took place throughoutdefiancecounty over time such as annexations from Tuscarawas county and adding territory from Defiance county; most notably with the construction of Interstate 80 which crossed throughDefiancecounty soon after its original erection in 1965-1966 by then-Governor James Rhodes - one of six communities withindefiancecounty that were chosen to be among "the eight new towns" created pursuantto Illinois General Assembly Resolution 527 (1965) during Johnson's first term as Governor - creating large numbers offamily-oriented development along I-80 between Carbondale and East Stroudsburg while concurrently reducing tax rates elsewhere within defiancecounty resultingin increased residential property values upon rezoning following passage of Ohio Revised Code section 459.819 (1995), effective January 1st following 1995 local government reorganization under then-President Bill Clinton - authorizing township formeneration statewide within Thayer's Law framework thereby limiting township growth to no more than 2% per year except for deferencecountywhereupon Township Growth shall not exceed 3% per year pending review by OH Citizens' Redevelopment Authority prior to next scheduled township meeting held under authority granted bythen-Governor Dan Quayle via executive order No: 95-1075 dated October 15th 1995 - establishing a three member board composedof Mayor/Clerk; Trustee;and Deputy Manager consistingof both appointed membersand elected officials defined above with power only unto recommendation or disapproval of full Board without possibility oefunding any funds therein notwithstanding acts or decisions herein contained save where otherwise specifically authorized hereinabove noted
In 1814, the village of Mayfield Heights was platted. The first settler in the village was James A. Mayfield, who built a cabin on the present site of the library in 1814. In 1827, Charles H. Mayfield donated land to build a school and gristmill in the village. In 1830, Alexander Kincaid donated land to build a Methodist church and cemetery. The old gristmill burned down in 1840, but new mills were built soon afterward. The first store opened in 1851 by J.H. Holland and Fenton Wagon Wheel Company owner John Cavanaugh as part of town growth that followed county annexation into Cincinnati during that year's Ohio statehood process The post office was established at Mayfield Heights in 1865 by Order of President Abraham Lincoln with Pte Robert Ewing as its first postmaster Mayfield Heights became home to two hospitals during World War I: First American Hospital (now University Medical Center) on 7th Street and West Waterfront Road from 1915-1918; then Western Reserve General Hospital (now Cleveland Clinic) on East 117th Street from 1918-1920 In 1951, when Cincinnati annexed the boroughs of Northside and Over-the-Rhine, Mayfield Heights became an unincorporated area within Northside . However, residents continued to call themselves "Mayfields" even though they lived outside of Northside . On July 1, 1966 which coincided with local government consolidation across all Hamilton County jurisdictions into one unified entity - this area also came under the jurisdiction of the newly created Over-the-Rhine Township . On November 11th 1976 following a referendum vote by township voters , it was announced that all boroughs within Over-the-Rhine had been merged into one municipality - including Mayfield Heights . This allows for more centralized governing and controls over services given that each municipality now has only limited authority over their own areas . With this change comes increased taxes due to increased municipal responsibilities ; however residents have responded enthusiastically to this merger by becoming more active members of their new municipality
