The land that would become Mayfield Heights was first settled by Native Americans in the late 17th century. In 1814, General George Washington and his army fought in the Battle of Fallen Timbers near present-day Mayfield Heights. As a result of this battle, many settlers came to the area looking for food and shelter. By 1830, most of what is now Mayfield Heights had been developed as a small town with two stores and 12 families living on five hundred acres (2 km²). In 1836, John Ladd founded the village of Laddville in what is now Medina County because he wanted to create an agricultural community near his home farm in Delaware Township. A few years later he started a school in Laddville which became one of the largest schools in southwestern Ohio. In 1868–69, when Medina County was organized into districts, Mayfield Heights became part of district No. 1.
