Mayfield Heights is a small town in Summit County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,584 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron-Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first known settler in Mayfield Heights was John Pemberton in 1810. The town was platted in 1815 by James Mayfield and his brother Ebenezer Mayfield. The name may be derived from an early settler named Maurice who lived near what is now the east side of Main Street. In 1830, David Green bought a tract of land north of present day Main Street and laid out what is now northeast corner of Prospect Avenue and Maple street. He named his home "Greene's Grove". There were other early residents including: Amos Sawyer (1820), Nicholas Barney (1825), John Harkins (1829), Michael Ladd ( 1830-37), Moses Drury ( 1840-45) and Elijah Cooks (1846). By 1850, there were 14 homes in the community with a total population of 173 people; it had increased to 369 by 1860 when Abram Brown purchased land adjacent to the current center of town from Thomas Neely for $100 per acre. Brown laid out a new community called Browns Ferry which included parts of present day northwest corner on Prospect Avenue and northeast corner on Maple Street before he died in 1865; it also took its name from him. The first post office opened in 1821 as "Atherton". A second post office opened as "New Albany" on April 10, 1827 after New Albany, Indiana became an independent state that year; this position was eliminated when Akron merged with Cleveland into the Union City metropolitan area on February 15th, 1907. On October 17th, 1880 a fire destroyed much of downtown New Albany which caused the abandonment of most residents except those who left behind their homes to rebuild within two years; some families moved back into their old communities while others built new homes elsewhere within minutes or hours according to one account Mayfield Heights began growing again during World War II as many citizens enlisted in military service or volunteered Their time and resources towards helping war effort On July 4th 1945 local resident John Fritsche killed four German soldiers trying to cross US border into Canada using fake IDs The largest event ever held at Mayfield Heights occurred on September 5th 1984 when over 100 students from throughout Summit County participated in "Ohio Valley Fest" which culminated with a concert at Blossom Music Center In 2002 prominent African American businessman Jamal Bryant donated land to create one block south of Main Street between Prospect Avenue and Maple Streets for use as an open air shopping mall; Mayfields Place LLC operated it until 2008 when it closed due to economic problems During 2007-2009 several large protests took place throughout Summit County against then Mayor Tom Barrett's plans for redevelopment near downtown Akron including sit-ins at various businesses including Jiffy Lube located across from Park Hills Village along Euclid Avenue - these protests led to public pressure which ultimately led to Barrett's resignation effective January 1st 2009 On November 3rd 2013 local resident Timothy Leary shot and wounded three people inside an occupied home invasion robbery attempt outside Of America Casino & Resort located off I-675 exit 7 just south of town limits
In the 1840s, Mayfield Heights was a small farming community in southeast Ohio. It was named for General George Washington's son-in-law, Jonathan Mayfield. The population of Mayfield Heights peaked at about 350 in 1851, but declined thereafter. In 1860, the property that now makes up Mayfield Heights was purchased by John D. Rockefeller Jr., who began developing it into a major oil and gas town. The town became one of the most important centers in the area because of its location on the route from Cleveland to Pittsburgh and its access to underground resources.
