The name may be derived from Mayfields, a farmstead in the area that was burned down by a fire in 1812. The first post office in Mayfield Heights was established on October 15, 1856, and remained open until it closed on December 5, 1907. The town started as an agricultural community with many small farms and homes. In 1870, the railway came to Mayfield Heights and began to bring people and goods to the town. This new economy brought jobs for locals and also allowed for more housing development which increased the population of Mayfield Heights by 50%. Mayfield Heights was founded in 1813 by General Jonathan Mayfield and his wife, Nancy. The area that is now Mayfield Heights was first populated by the Shawnee Indians. The Mayfields were able to purchase land in what is now Mayfield Heights from the Shawnees in 1814. The land was used for farming and hunting until it became a town in 1847. In 1870, the town of Mayfield Heights annexation made it an independent municipality. On October 15, 1901, the town of Mayfield Heights merged with the village of Westlake to form the present-day city of Cleveland.
