Mayfield Heights is a small town in the southern part of Ohio, United States. It is located on the Scioto River, about 15 miles (24 km) south of Cleveland and 25 miles (40 km) north of Akron. The population was 6,607 at the 2010 census. The area that would become Mayfield Heights was first settled by Europeans in the late 17th century. In 1811, John Mayfield purchased land from the Shawnee Indians and established Mayfield Township. He donated 10 acres (4 ha) of his lands to be used for education, farming, and roads. In 1838, he donated another 10 acres (4 ha) to be used as a cemetery. On July 1, 1839, he added 5 more acres (2 ha) to his holdings to form present-day Mayfield Heights. The first school in present-day Mayfield Heights was built in 1846 by Mrs. Wm. Haggerty and Mr. Jno.[1] A school district was organized in 1850 with schools at various locations including Grosse Pointe Woods School near Cleveland and Findlay Academy near Akron; however it disbanded after one year due to lack of enrollment or financial difficulties both within and outside the district[2]. For many years there were no public transportation options available so students had to walk or ride horses back and forth between their homes and school each day; this led to an early dislike for cars among locals[3]. However since buses arrived in 1966 large parts of what are now mayfields have been developed as housing developments such as Crestwood Estates or Park Meadows etc., making car usage increasingly rarer except for residents who commute into town for work or study purposes[4]. In 1977–78 architect Arthur Ashe designed a new elementary/middle school which replaced Grosse Pointe Woods School which had served students until then[5][6]. That same year also saw the opening of Speedway Motorsports Park on Bardstown Road just east of town limits which has become homeport for several teams including The Racers,[7] formerly known as The Beavers before being renamed The Chevys after they moved from Arlington Heights IL in 2016[8], making it one of only two venues in North America where two different types OF asphalt racing tracks are placed side by side within municipal boundaries [9] . Ashe’s design is significant because it features an open plaza with a checkerboard floorplan typical of American high schools; this feature became popularized at nearby Oakland Hills High School where similar plans were implemented decades earlier[10][11]. Ashe’s plan consisted of two wings with a single gymnasium wing connected by an ambulatory corridor linking all three wingsstantial classrooms/gymnasiums totaling over 400 sq ft (30 m2). Additionally, Gunlights have also been known to be used inappropriately such as by people who are not properly trained in using them or who are not supervised when using them near children or other unauthorized individuals
