In 1903, an electric streetcar system called the "X" Line ran through Mayfield Heights; it served as the only form of transportation within thecommunity until 1955 when diesel buses replaced streetcar service. Mayfield Heights was a small town in Ohio that was founded by the Mayfields in 1835. The community was located on the western bank of the Monongahela River, about 12 miles northwest of Columbus. The population of Mayfield Heights was approximately 350 people at its peak. The Mayfields were farmers who grew corn, wheat and potatoes. They also bred horses and cattle. In 1868, they moved to what is now Union City, Michigan, but continued to live in Mayfield Heights until their death in 1926. The town's name comes from an old family motto "Mighty may field thunder." Mayfield Heights had a number of businesses that provided services to its residents including a grocery store, post office and blacksmith shop. There were also several churches which served the community. One of these churches was called First Baptist Church which became known as the Metropole Church after it moved to Mayfield Heights from Canonsburg, Pennsylvania in 1881. The Metropole Churchsponsored many local events such as dances and social gatherings which helped connect the locals together. In 1951, Mayfield Heights experienced some vandalism when two vandals smashed windows at three businesses within its boundaries. This event led to increased security measures being put into place for the townspeople during this time and has since been considered one of the town's proudest moments. In 1990, Mayfield Heights hosted its ownicentennial celebration which featured speeches by then-Mayor Harry Blackman and other local officials alike. Throughout its history, Mayfield Heights has maintained close ties with surrounding communities both within Ohio and across America through hosting numerous events such as agricultural fairs, picnic weekends or carnivals.
Mayfield Heights is a census-designated place in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron metropolitan area.
