Mayfield Heights, Ohio is a small town in the southern portion of the state of Ohio. The population was 9,074 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Middletown, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Mayfield Heights were French traders in 1696. They named it after a prominent family in France who had settled there some years earlier. The first settler was John Mayfield, who arrived in 1796 or 1797 and built his home on a parcel of land that is now Beaver Creek Road. He also founded what is today Mayfield Township and later served as its first mayor. In 1812, James Kline bought one hundred acres (40 hectares) adjacent to present-day Mayfield Heights from David Blanchard for $1,000 cash and set about developing it into a town. He named it Kline's Townsite after himself and his brother John Kline II (son of James). The first buildings were erected here in 1813, including the old courthouse which still stands today on Beaver Creek Road between West Main Street and East Second Street. In 1814, Kline sold his remaining lands to John Pritchard for $500 cash; this area became known as Parkersburg Township because of this purchase. In 1826, George Washington Carver bought two hundred dollars (equivalent to £27 at that time) from Peter Cooper for use as seed money for developing a cereal crop that would become America's most famous product – corn – and he named the land where he grew these crops Carversville after himself and his wife Martha Washington Carver (née Lincoln). Mayfield Heights was a small town in the U.S. state of Ohio, located about twelve miles south of Cleveland on the east bank of the Cuyahoga River. The population was 1,830 at the 2000 census. Mayfield Heights is best known for its large Mayfield Hills Cemetery, which contains more than fifty thousand gravesites. The town was founded by James Mifflin in 1814 as a cattle and horse farmstead on what is now Trumbull County Road 3 north of present-day Mayfield Heights. Mifflin built his house and other buildings on what are now their original lots. In 1828, Mayfield Heights became a part of Cleveland, but it remained an independent community until 1850 when it merged with nearby Exeter Township to form Mayfield Township (now Mentor). In 1907, due to increasing population growth in Cleveland, Mayfield Heights incorporated as a city under the name "Hillsborough". On July 14, 1913, following passage of laws authorizing such incorporation by special vote of residents only, Hillsborough City officially adopted its current name - "MayFIELD HEIGHTS", after James Mifflin's home and estate in Hillsborough County near modern day Cleveland - becoming one of the first cities in America to do so. Since its incorporation as a city, the population has grown rapidly; from 2,521 in 1990 to 6,689 at the 2000 census. As a result of this growth and development over time; many aspects associated with traditional small town life have been lost or left behind: such as retail stores being closed down for lack of customers; older homes remaining unaltered for generations; social events happening annually around Fourth Of July weekend; and decline in population density relative to larger municipalities like Cleveland which have seen similar levels of growth over recent decades. However much has changed since then - including new businesses opening up within minutes' walk or lessof downtowns providing easy access to all that may be enjoyed by those living there – giving old timers their farewell chance before they retire or move away themselves!
The Mayfield Heights community was founded in 1867 by Ebenezer Mayfield, a lawyer and landowner. The community grew rapidly after the Civil War, and by 1870 it had over 100 residents.
