The name Mayfield comes from an original grant of land to John Mayfield in 1796. The community was established as a farming village in 1855 and then became a semirural township. The township was abolished by the state government in 1913 and incorporated as a city on February 14, 1921. On July 9, 1986, it merged with Cleveland to form the Cleveland–Akron metropolitan area. Mayfield Heights has a rich history that began before its incorporation into the larger Cleveland metropolitan area. In 1855, John Mayfield granted 160 acres (65 hectares) of land to his brother-in-law James Sibley for development into what would become Mayfield Heights. That land would later become part of downtown Cleveland and today forms much of University Circle and other neighborhoods within the metropolitan area. Another early investor in MayFIELD HEIGHTS was Aitkin & Cook who donated $10,000 towards construction of their first store on High Street just east of present day Midtown Crossing Shopping Center which opened on November 5th 1902 - this store also served as home for many years for Mr & Mrs Aitkin until their move out in late 2006 when they opened up shop at nearby Case Western Reserve University!
