Mayfield Heights is a small town in northeastern Ohio, United States. The population was 5,611 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Columbiana County. The village first formed in 1824 when part of the township of Mayfield were laid out as a village. The name originated from an area near the intersection of Highways 11 and 13, which was called "Milton." Milton was named for John Milton, an English philosopher who wrote on political economy and mathematics. In 1827, under new government rules that applied to towns founded after 1800, Mayfield Heights became a borough. On July 8, 1829, it changed its name to Mayfield Heights (still used today). The first post office opened in 1870 and closed in 1951. The current USPS building was built in 1909 and is still used today as the town's only business center. Mayfield Heights has two high schools: Columbiana County High School (opened in 1969) and Mount Carmel-area Junior/Senior High School (opened in 1959). Both schools are public with separate administrations and teachers' unions; however, they share many common facilities including locker rooms andajiks between classes. There are also three elementary schools - Parkview Elementary (founded 1924), Crestline Elementary (founded 1922), and Legacy Elementary (founded 1923). These four schools form what is known as the "K-8" school system; additionally there are several private schools located within a few miles of Mayfield Heights proper but not open to students grades K through 12th grade: Stroudsburg Area Jr./Sr., Holy Cross Catholic School North America - Clinton Township, Valley View Christian Academy - West Covina Hills, Presbyterian Academy Easton - Easton Township

By 1830, the population had reached 500 people. In 1835, Mayfield Heights became a village and it continued to grow until it had a population of 1,500 in 1850. The growth of the town led to its first school being built in 1852. The village also began to develop businesses and services such as healthcare and education. In 1865, Mayfield Heights became a city and it continued to grow until it had a population of 6,000 in 1900. The growth of the city led to its first library being built in 1904. In 1916, Mayfield Heights became a suburb of Cincinnati and it continued to grow until it had a population of 27,000 in 2000.
