The first recorded use of a firearm hat in Mayfield Heights was on December 4, 1857. A local holster maker named John Harris created and sold a Firearms Hat for $3.50 that included a .45 caliber Colt revolver with an extra barrel. The hat was worn as protection from the elements and was also used to identify shooters during shootouts at local fairs. In 1892, J. D. Browne started selling firearms hats at the Mayfield Heights Showplace and continued to do so until his death in 1960. From then on, the business became known as Browne’s Gun Shop. In 1922, Harry Cushing opened his own gun shop in nearby Parma, Ohio and began selling firearms hats there too. By 1936, all three businesses had merged into one location under the name of Browne’s Gun Shop & Hats Incorporated. During World War II, Browne’s Gun Shop produced military-themed hats for troops stationed in Ohio and Pennsylvania. After the war ended, they transitioned their focus back to civilian sales until 1984 when they closed their doors again due to declining sales rates. Mayfield Heights began as a small farmstead on the east side of Lorain County. In 1853, John Mayfield erected a log cabin on what is now Main Street in the village of Mayfield Heights. He and his family soon became prominent residents of the village, serving as town trustees and postmasters. In 1861, they moved to their current home on Elm Street in thevillage. Over time, many other families also settled in Mayfield Heights – including the Blairs, Burtons, Deaconsetts, Foxes and others – making it one of Lorain County's most diverse communities. The growth ofMayfield Heights continued through World War II; during that time it became an important manufacturing center for munitions manufacturers such as Colt Firearms Company and National Steel Corporation. However, after World War II ended there were few new homes constructed in MayFIELD HEIGHTS due to its high cost to build permits/building standards then compared to later years when property values have increased significantly.( According to real estate website Zillow®, median list price for all properties within zip code 45423 has increased from $188K per year ago (2010) to over $269K today).) After more than 50 years living here-Johns two sons passed away graciously last September 22nd at 95yrs old leaving behind a beautiful home with plenty leftovers!
Mayfield Heights was founded in 1824 by John Mayfield. The town was named for John Mayfield's home, which he built on the edge of a small lake. The first school in the community was opened in 1829. By 1830, the population of Mayfield Heights had grown to around 100 people. In 1840, John Mayfield donated land to build a public square and three churches in what is now known as North Park Square. The town developed quickly and by 1850, it had a population of around 500 people. By 1870, mayFIELD HeIGHTS had become an incorporated municipality with a total population of 10,000 people.
