As a result, although it includes parts of both Stark and Union Counties, much of its territory is located within just one or two municipalities: Grove City, Mentor, and Youngstown. In 2000, the city council voted to establish a separate town called "Mentor" on land annexed byMayfield Heights from Mentor Township; this annexation did not change the boundaries of either municipality. According to the 2010 US Census report,[1] 5,813 people lived in Mayfield Heightsucing its population size to 456 when including neighboring Grove City/Mentor Township (2), Youngstown (3), and Delaware Township (1). The median household income was $50,594[2] making it one of Cleveland's wealthiest neighborhoods[3]. However recent studies have shown that median incomes are decreasing across all areas within Greater Cleveland[4], with particular declines seen in inner-city neighborhoods such as Brownsville/Harrisonburg and Cleveland's South Side.[5] This slowdown has been largely due to gentrification processes rather than economic recessionary forces,[6] but may finally begin to reverse with new development projects announced throughout Greater Cleveland aimed at boosting poverty reduction rates within low-income communities

Today, there are only a few remnants of the original community - a small park with picnic tables and grills, and two churches that were built around 1900.
Mayfield Heights was founded in 1811 as a small community on the Scioto River in northeast Ohio. In 1823, the town was renamed Mayfield Village after General James Wilkinson, who had helped to found it. By 1830, the population of Mayfield Heights had increased to 800 residents and it began to grow rapidly with new construction and development. The town became a center for education and industry, with businesses such as The Mayfield Company printing newspapers and selling cloth, shoes, groceries, and other items. A store on High Street called The Gilded Age Store was one of the most popular stops for customers in early 20th century America. In 1916, an oil refinery was built in nearby Shippensburg and produced oil until 1977. After years of decline during the 1970s and 1980s, Mayfield Heights regained some popularity during the 1990s as a retail center for North Olmsted County. In recent years however, many of the businesses have closed or been moved away from their original locations due to competition from larger towns within North Olmsted County.
