Mayfield Heights is a small town in the southern portion of Franklin County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus metropolitan area. The community began as a cotton plantation and mill town established by General David Forbes in 1817. The first post office was founded in 1819, and Mayfield Heights became a village in 1892. A railroad station was built in 1893 and continued to be used until its closure in 1978. Mayfield Heights has several restaurants, two banks, one health-care center, five churches (two Baptist and four Methodist), three parks (one with an outdoor pool and another with playgrounds and tennis courts), five elementary schools (grades 3-8), one middle school (grades 9-12), one high school (grades 13-14) and one special needs day care/preschool. There are also several homes for sale along the main street that backs up to the local parkland.
In spite of their widespread usage, binoculars are a relatively new invention. The first recorded use of binoculars is from the 6th century AD and they were used to observe birds in the wild. In 1838, Nicholas-Jacques Conte designed a pair of metal-framed Binoculars with lenses made from small pieces of metal which he called “Cuproscope”. These early binoculars were able to resolve objects up to about 30 cm away and had a magnification of only 1:10,000. By 1850, advances in technology had led to the development of longer-ranged binoculars with 4 or 5 lens assemblies that could be focused by hand. With improvements in manufacturing processes and materials, later models such as the Kulland Binocular (1871) featured high quality optics and superior resolution for their day – allowing blind people to use them for hunting and other outdoor activities.

Mayfield Heights was founded in 1796 by Major Elijah Mayfield and his wife, Deborah. The area that is now Mayfield Heights was part of the Northwest Territory which was organized in 1792. The territory extended from what is now Cincinnati to Dayton and more specifically to the communities of Colerain, Mayfield, and Westwood. The first European settlers in what is now Mayfield Heights were German refugees who had come overland from Germany during the revolutionary war. They began farming land around present day Colerain in 1796 and built a log cabin there. In 1801, they moved to their current location and started a small grocery store called the Post Office on Third Avenue. In 1807, they bought surrounding land which included present day Westwood, Colerain, and Mayfield Heights. In 1814, Elijah Mayfield died leaving behind three children- Elijah Jr., Sarah (Smythe), and John- all of whom quickly took over their father's businesses. By 1830, Sarah had married another man named David Smythe and John hadmarried Mary Ann Whitehead. That same year, mayfields purchased additional land including present day Dearborn Park from David Smythe for $3 parceled out monthly as dowry for Sarah’s marriage to him When it came time for General George Washington to move his army through Ohio during his final campaign against British forces in 1794 he chose to use Mayfields as his encampment due to its strategic location near the confluence of the rivers Thames and Monongahela. Aftermath of this battle led General Washington to name much of what is today Ohio after him- such as Washington County (part of Kentucky), Mount Vernon County (in Virginia), Ft Erie (in Pennsylvania), etcetera After completing his military duty President James Kapp set up shop at The Post Office in nearby Portsmouth while he awaited word from Congress on how best to proceed with colonizing new lands in America west of the Appalachian Mountains . On January 25th, 1800 Kapp received notification that Congress had passed an act creating a government under the auspices of Mexico providing for Missions within Mexican territory west of Texas- thus initiating what would become known as Indian Removal Policy Kapp decided then & there that Ohio should be among these lands because its proximity To Mexico made it an ideal place for settlement & development . Accordingly , on March 8th 1800 Kapp issued a proclamation designating portions or entire counties within our limits as Mission Lands . This event marked perhaps oneof historys most brazen giveawaysyet&oneofmayfieldsbiggestsuccesses In 1802–1803 Majors Averill Harperson & William Cranch established themselves at Harperstown along with other frontier men including Richard Milhous Nixon who became famous later as Mayor Of Cleveland & author Of Little America
Mayfield Heights was a small town in Mahoning County, Ohio, from 1821 to 1827. The first settler in Mayfield Heights was John Mayfield who arrived in 1792. He and his wife lived on the east side of the mountain where they built a cabin. They had six children: three boys and three girls. In 1821, John's grandson Elijah Mayfield settled on the west side of the mountain, near what is now Parma Township. The family renamed their settlement after Elijah's father-in-law, James Mayfield (1768-1855). In 1827, James' son Gideon died and may have been buried there as well. The settlers may have named their township after him or one of his descendants though no record has been found to support this claim.
