The first school in the township was built in 1839 and served as a daycare for girls until it burned down in 1865. In 1868, the township voted to change its name to Mayfield Township. The name may be derived from the fact that many of the settlers were farmers and their homes were located near a meadow that was called "Mayfield."
Mayfield Heights was an American town in the Steubenville, Ohio area. It was located about 8 miles (13 km) east of Steubenville and 10 miles (16 km) west of Davidstown on the Unitarian Universalist Church Road. The population was 1,819 at the 2000 census. The first settler in Mayfield Heights was John Cramer, who founded a grist mill in 1792. In 1825, George Washington Carver settled in Mayfield Heights and started a chicken farm. He also built a house on what is now North Park Street. In 1827, Stephen Foster bought land near where North Park Street meets East Market Street and built a home there called "Foster's Grove". The town name changed to Mayfield Heights in 1868 when it became part of the larger city of Steubenville.
