In 1923, William S. Brown and his sons, Harry and Bob, started the Massillon Gun Company in a small room in the basement of their home. The company specialized in making soft gun cases for handguns. In 1932, the company moved to its current location on East Main Street in Massillon. The Brown familyowned and operated the Massillon Gun Company until 1965 when it was sold to Jens Hardtler of Germany. In 1984, Hardtler sold the company to John Bowers of Lafayette, Indiana. Bowers continued to operate it as a part-time business until he died in 1997. Today, the Massillon Gun Company is still in business with its original owners maintaining a presence at its old location on East Main Street in Massillon. The company produces cases for both pistols and rifles and continues to make customizations for each customer’s needs.

The first people to settle in what is now Massillon were Indians who called it "Mawki." In 1814, Colonel John Green established a military fortification known as Fort Green on this site, which served as a garrison for surrounding settlements until 1824 when it was abandoned due to lack of supplies. When Ohio became a state in 1802, Fort Green became an official post within Trumbull County. In 1825, Massillon was platted and named after George Washington Ballou, an American politician and surveyor who had come from Illinois to help platting out Cleveland. At that time, most of what is now Ohio was still part of Indiana Territory. Ballou donated land for a town square in Massillon and directed that cornerstone be laid on December 3, 1825 with General Andrew Jackson presiding over the event George Washington Ballou's Square remains today one of downtown Massillon's main attractions
