Massillon was a small town in central Ohio, United States. It was one of the key settlements in the region that became known as the Great Lakes Area. The town is today a ghost town and it is unknown what happened to its residents after they left during the American Civil War. The first permanent European settlers in Massillon were two men, John Cranch and George Stephenson, who arrived in 1789. They built a log cabin on the banks of the Maumee River. The town began to grow rapidly, thanks to its location at the junction of two important Routes 9 and 12. By 1812, Massillon had over 200 residents. In 1814, General Anthony Wayne's army marched through Massillon on their way to battle against Mexico at Monterrey; as part of this expedition, General Wayne's army took many supplies and people with them including several hundred horses and wagons which contributed greatly to local agriculture and commerce. During America's defining period of Reconstruction following the Civil War (1865-1913), Massillon experienced rapid growth due to heavy industry which sprang up in nearby Toledo during that time period.
