In 1892, Ohio's Massillon Manufacturing Company was the first to produce an electric light bulb. The company name derived from the town of Massillon, which was then a small village in Northwest Ohio. In 1912, the company became part of GE Electric Corporation and continued producing high-quality electric lights until it merged with General Electric in 1978. The mass production of electric lights in Massillon began with oil lamps. These lamps were built into large kitchen ranges and used kerosene or whale oil as their fuel source. When these ranges were replaced by gas ranges in the early 1920s, oil lamps had to be retired because they were no longer feasible for use with gas furnaces. In 1923, GE developed a new type of lamp called a "tube lamp." This type of lamp consisted of two metal tubes connected by an electrical connection. The tube lamp was much more efficient than previous types of lamps and it became common on college campuses and other large buildings. In 1925, GE released its "HX" line of electric light bulbs. Massillon is a small town in Ohio, United States. The population was 3,059 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Ross County and part of the Akron metropolitan area. It lies along the Scioto River and has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen climate classification Cfa). The first permanent European settlement in what is now Massillon was made by French colonists in 1681. The name derived from "mahsen" meaning 'humble' or 'poorly built'. In 1795, when Massillon became a state of the United States, it was named for General James Wilkinson who had led British forces against the French in that year's Battle of Fallen Timbers. After Ohio's admission into the Union as a state on March 4, 1803, Wilkinson was elected to be its first governor. As governor, he developed Massillon into an important manufacturing center with mills such as those located on Main Street today. From 1825 until 1902, Massillon also served as seat of Ross County government; however, since Ross County is now part of Cleveland-Akron Combined Statistical Area (CSA), this office has been transferred to Cleveland. The post office here began operations on October 25th, 1826 under the name "Miamisburg". The current spelling honors James Kappeler who served as postmaster until his death in 1972; he had been preceded by his father John A Kappeler Sr.. In 1907–1910 both houses of Congress met at massillon to discuss legislation affecting education throughout America because then-Senator Hiram Johnson (D-TX) felt that American students were not being given an opportunity to learn about their political system and democracy through school curriculums across America. This meeting marked one significant event in history culminating with passage of education reform acts by both Houses which set new standards for public schools across America including student testing programs and national curriculum development plans which continue to this day. This event helped spur emulation among American school districts leading to further improvement across all levels nationwide over ensuing decades culminating with Nafta/PepsiCo’s purchase and conversion of Lima High School into one of its large corporate campuses known now simply as “The campus” within walking distance from downtown Lima – just blocks away from where some locals still refer to “massilon square”!
