Massillon is a city in Franklin County, Ohio, United States. The population was 31,871 at the 2010 census. It is the ninth-largest city in the state of Ohio and the largest city on the border of West Virginia and Ohio. The area now known as Massillon was first settled by Europeans in 1788. In 1813, General David Steuben founded what is now Steubenville Township in Massillon Township. The town of Massillon was established on May 20, 1834 by Commissioners John Wills and Lewis Cass as a post office with a population of only 25 people. The original name for the town was "Fulton." In 1836, James Lumber Company founder Isaac Walton donated land to become an incorporated village called "Massillon" after his home town of Walton Hall in Cheshire, England. On July 1st of that year, Massillon became an official village with a population of 350 residents. In 1840, Colonel Amos Eaton purchased 640 acres (2 km²) east of present day Jefferson Road from John Prentice for $10 per acre (4 ha). This land would later be used to create FirstEnergy Corporation's current campus site. In 1859–60 two major floods destroyed many homes and businesses in downtown Massillon including one which completely destroyed Agricultural Laboratory Building No 4 located at 14th Street and High Street NW., also damaging historic churches such as St Bartholomew's Episcopal Church which still stands today across High Street from where it once stood However most importantly this event left behind evidence that demonstrated how destructive flash flooding could be when combined with rain/sleet storms . Aftermath Impact Exhibition A bill authorizing appropriations for flood control operations was introduced into Congress on March 5th 1861 but no further action followed until September 7th when President Abraham Lincoln signed HJ 924 into law making massillon one of five cities within 10 miles (16 km) OF Washington D C to receive Federal assistance in flood control..massilon will eventually become part ofwest virginia after being annexed by ohio on september 3rd 1903

Massillon is a small town in the U.S. state of Ohio, located on the Scioto River. It was founded in 1814 by John Clark and his family as a trading post on the east bank of the river, about northwest of Cincinnati. After being seized by the United States during the War for Independence, Massillon became an American military base and later served as a center for cotton production. In 1851, it was made the seat of government for Summit County, which merged with Lucas County in 1857 to form Ohio Valley District No. 3. The name "Massillon" first appeared on maps in 1796 when French traders called it "Masseilon". The village proper was platted in 1800 by Nicholas Morrell and named after Stephen Massaligon, an Indian trader who had taken refuge there with his family two years earlier. In 1814, John Clark purchased 160 acres (63 hectares) southeast of present-day Massillon from Nicholas Morrell and built a cabin thereon which served as the town's first courthouse until replaced in 1850 by a new building designed by architect Solomon Halsey Foster.. Clark's original mill was destroyed during Union General Anthony Wayne's 1863 attack on Fort Warren near present-day Dayton; however, he continued to produce flour at his cabin until 1865 when he moved his business to what is now Xenia., Ohio where he died five years later.. The following year saw significant growth at Massillon when Isaac Noyes arrived from New Orleans with plans to establish an Improved Cotton Mills Company at nearby Tuscarawas City.. By 1830, Massillon had over 100 residents and six public buildings including a schoolhouse and jail which latter served as local law enforcement office until burned down in 1836.. In 1837-38 construction began on what would become known as State House Square; this included both Government House (later renamed National Capitol Building), currently occupied by the National Archives & Records Administration (NARA) before its move to downtown Washington D.C.; and Second Street between Government House Square & Market Street serving as commercial district surrounding government offices including courthouse/ sessions court house (now part of Richland County Courthouse Complex), woolen mills (owned & operated through 1870s by GEOGRAPHICS COOPERATIVE OF AMERICA), tannery & grocery store(s), Post Office Department warehouse/mills #1&2 Built 1861-.
