Massillon is a town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 3,405 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1825 by General David Dixon and named for Captain John Massillon, who fought in the War of 1812 as a captain with the United States Volunteers. The first store was built on what is now Main Street. A post office called Massillon was established in 1827, and remained in operation until 1865. John Fenton became mayor of Massillon in 1907 after serving two terms as a member of the Stark County Board of Education. He also served as president of First National Bank of Toledo from 1912 to 1916 and as vice president from 1916 to 1921. Fenton died on November 5, 1927 at age 77 years old. In 1920, Mayor Fenton's daughter Lydia married George Henschelius, an American manufacturer and senator from Ohio’s tenth district who had been born in Massillon and had resided there since infancy. Henschelius ran for office twice but lost both times; he first ran for township trustee (1924) but lost to incumbent Elmer Kappel; then he ran for county commissioner (1928), but lost to incumbent John Matson Jr.. In 1931 he won election to the U.S House of Representatives from Ohio's twelfth district—the same constituency into which he had run four years earlier when he also lost his bid for county commissioner.. In 1938 Henschelius became proprietor (and later sole owner)of WSW Steel Corporation; WSW Steel remains active today with operations located at 6335 S State Route 422 east of Akron., about two miles east-northeast of downtown Massillon.. Remington started making firearms in 1881 under the name Richards & Myers Armory Company Ltd.. They originally manufactured muzzleloaders, shotguns, rifles, handguns, explosives, clothing items, soap products, etc.. In 1911 they merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company to form what is now Winchester Ammunition Inc.. Remington continued production of firearms until 1968 when they merged with Magnum Research Corporation to form Magnum Research/Winchester Firearms Incorporated (MRW).

Massillon is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the seat of Summit County. The population was 99,593 as of 2019, making it the largest city in Summit County and one of the most populous cities in Ohio. It is also home to the massillon-renowned Wright Patents Company. The area that would become Massillon was first settled by Shawnee Indians who called it Wooster after their leader, Wooster Wyandot. In 1814, John Cranch discovered oil reserves at Massillon and submitted a report to Congress; this led to his death in 1815 while exploration continued. In 1825, General Andrew Jackson arrived at Massillon with 1,500 troops after defeating nearby Native American forces during the Battle of Chillicothe. He named the town for himself and erected a cabin on what is now Second Street near where Pennsylvania Avenue crosses I-670s south border. By 1830, almost all Germans had left for new lands west of the Allegheny Mountains due to restrictions placed on German immigration by then President James Kapp from his own government. Warehouse owner George Dretzky started construction on what would become Dretzky's Brewery which opened in 1830s across Third Street from today's Erieview mall Dretzky built two other breweries soon afterwards: The Harrison Brewing Company (opened 1840) and The Potteries Brewery (opened 1850). All three breweries were located around present day Second Street between West Main and North High streets before becoming part of Harvester Foods company in 1970 when that company merged into ConAgra Foods Incorporated The Harrison Brewing Company was closed circa 1890 but its products still remain on store shelves today with some rebranded as "Harrison Lagers." massillonedewspapers
