The case took place on December 18, 1861, when three men - John Wilkes Booth, Edwin Booth and Abraham Lincoln - assassinated President Abraham Lincoln in Springfield, Illinois. Massillon, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 97,391 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Ohio and one of its eleven metropolitan areas. It is located on the border of Butler and Ashland counties, about 15 miles (24 km) north-northwest of Cleveland and 30 miles (48 km) east-southeast of Toledo. The first European settlers in what is now Massillon were French Canadians who named their community La Salle after Saint Laurent de Coulanges, an early Jesuit missionary to Canada who died there in 1701. In 1813 Massillon was founded as a town by five pioneers from Miami County, Indiana Territory - brothers George Washington Carver, Solomon Northrup Rockefeller, Eli Whitney, and others - under the name "Carthage." The town became a county seat in 1821 when it was part of Ashtabula County. In 1834–35 General Simon Bolivar Butterfield traversed America on his ill-fated Overland Mail Expedition and spent most of his winter near Akron where he met James Kapp and others behind the failed wagon road project known as Butterfield's Highway. One account has butterfield remarking that if he could go back he would have taken Kapp's wagon road instead from Akron to Springfield instead of taking smaller roads through Delaware Township which led him to Ironton Junction; but this version is not confirmed by historical accounts or contemporaneous documents. At Bolivar's request some land grants were made available for purchase at Ironton Junction including 6 acres (2 ha) adjoining what later became Massillon.
This initial land grant included what is now Union Station Square with buildings still standing today including: John Fenton’s Storefront Building on Main Street (now occupied by Weis Restaurant), Daniel Webster’s stable complex off State Route 10 south between Third Street and Fourth Street (now vacant), Masonic Temple No 2 on Seventh Avenue east between First Street and Second Street (now occupied by Gateway Ford dealership), post office building at Ninth Avenue west between First Street and SecondStreet (now vacant), Methodist Episcopal Church across Ninth Avenue from Post Office Building before it moved to its present location south of Tenth street Eventually other settlements sprang up around Ironton Junction such as: Dunkirk Landing on the southern bank of the Monongahela River just upstream frompresent day Union Station Square; Clear Springs on high ground immediately north side of intersectionof Sixth Ave./Ironton Rd./Upper Arlington Rd.; White Sands farther downriver alongthe left bank opposite Upper Arlington Road A small dam was built across Monongahela River near present day Union Station Square also called Duncannon Dam which served as both water supply for Massillon village as well as powering mills run by local farmers until 1962 when Allyn & Bacon bought it for $2 million. In 1836 James Kapp purchased 5 percent ownership interest in Butterfield's Highway from General John Ladd so that he could continue developing it further west. By 1840 Butterfield had completed construction on what would eventually become US 1st avenue which linked Cleveland with Cincinnati via Batavia Township However due to problems associated with overland travel during that year a new route was chosen – Old York Road running parallel to Interstate 75 – bypassing Butler County altogether"Ashtabula County...became one district within [Cleveland] county when that territory was divided en bloc into four sections according to partition lines set out by President James Buchanan prior to 1850." - Encyclopedia Brittanica
