Massillon is a city in central Ohio, United States. The population was 26,914 at the 2010 census. The city is the county seat of Ottawa County. It is part of the Columbus-Middletown-Akron, OH-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that became Massillon was first settled by Native Americans in the 17th century and was known as "Kinzie's Land". In 1803, General Anthony Wayne's army destroyed an Indian village at what is now Massillon after killing most of its inhabitants. Massillon became a town on December 12, 1806 when it was incorporated as a borough by an act of the legislature. In 1812, John Crampton founded Cramptonville on land he had bought from the Shawnee Indians near what is now Massillon. He named it for his friend and business associate James Crampton II., who had come to America in 1800 and built up a successful sugar refineries in Pennsylvania and Delaware. In 1824, John Dickey set out from Dayton to build a road across Ohio from Cincinnati to Toledo along what would become Ulysses S Grant's route overland from Kentucky to stoke up American nationalism during the Mexican–American War. He named his new settlement after George Washington (1732–1802), Major-General in command of British forces during their Invasion of North America in 1781 which led to the American Revolution. Dickey arrived at Massilon on October 15, 1824 with his wagon train and began building roads throughout eastern Ohio; this included one leading through what is now Massillon. By 1830, Dickey had completed about 60 miles (97 km) of road including parts of today's cities of Columbus, Middletown and Akron; these roads are still traveled by motorists today as US Route 421 or I-75 eastbound between Akron/Middletown and Cincinnati/Milton Rd./US 41 southbound between Middletown and Canton). On January 14, 1830 representatives from six surrounding towns met at Newark’s State House complex on High Street – later called “the Capitol” – for a meeting that led to creation of “The Western Reserve Company” formed to improve transportation between those towns along routes already being developed by Dickey or others involved in early mass transportation systems such as ferries across Lake Erie Republican Lake Huron - then unnavigable -and railways linking them together under one common system….massillon got its charter as an independent town on February 7th…..During this time there were many stores open 24/7 selling everything needed for farmers living close by such as flour, cornmeal & butter while also having general store 5 blocks away selling clothes etc…..Farming continued until around 1840 when machine tools started coming into use making farming more difficult….. By 1860 there were only 1 or 2 farms left…… By 1870 there were just 10 farms left…………Today there are over 100 businesses operating within downtown limits alone! The first European to visit Massillon was French explorer Pierre Charles de Young on July 4, 1795, during his exploration of eastern Ohio as part of his prospective route from Pittsburgh to Cincinnati via Fort Wayne. DeYoung named what he thought were two rivers the "Water White" and "Water Black", but they became known as the "Ohio" River and its tributaries due to their coloration. The area that would become Massillon was inhabited by Native Americans for several hundred years before being explored by Europeans. In 1800, General David Wilkinson founded an agricultural settlement called Wilkinson's Village on land which he had purchased from the Shawnee tribe east of present-day Toledo. The village grew rapidly, becoming one of the most important settlements in central Ohio until it was destroyed by a fire in 1814. In 1819, John Cramer established a fur trading post at present-day Powell's Point on Lake Erie near Akron after finding valuable resources there during his explorations of that region for US Fur Company president Josiah Wedgwood Marshall Jr.. In 1825, Cramer sold his holdings in Powell's Point to James Sennett who renamed itmassillon after himself and moved his family there from Boston along with other settlers on May 5, 1830 . The town declined following Sennett's death in 1835; however, massilonians supported them financially throughout much of the 1840s as they faced difficulties such as heavy debtors' prison sentences imposed upon those who could not pay back their loans . In 1850s local merchants began marketing goods locally instead of sourcing items wholesale through New York City; this led to increased economic development around massilonians starting about 1860 when trade restrictions among countries ended withthe American Civil War Afterward, business boomed thanks to new transportation links developed between America and Europe including railroads; this led to increased production within town boundaries which helped boost sales tax receipts . In 1870s bankrolled industrial expansion spurned by high rates charged for navigation services favored over other businesses resulted in expanding mills within town limits while independent businesses failed because competition from larger companies made prices too high for many products offered During World War II more than 1 million people employed within manufacturing plants located within town limits
