In 1853, Massillon was founded by Nicholas G. Romein and John Riddle as a town in the now-defunct Western Reserve County. The town's first gunsmith, Jeremiah Halsey, built his shop on what is now the corner of Main and West Streets. In 1856, Romein offered to sell land adjacent to Massillon for a new settlement; the citizens wisely declined, choosing instead to build their own city on the site. Today, Massillon is still home to a small population of residents and businesses who continue to live close to one another despite having over 100 miles between them. The NRA has been headquartered in Massillon since it was founded in 1934. The City of Massillon observes Gun Day each year on May 14th, which celebrates the city'sGunsmiths Hall Museum's collection of local guns dating back to 1795.

Massillon, Ohio is a city in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 781 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Middletown, OH–KY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now encompassing Massillon was established as an independent town in 1811 by General David Wilkinson. It became a village in 1853 and then a city in 1898. The current name originated with John Denny's purchase of land here in 1825. The first settlers to Massillon were Andrew Johnson and his family from Virginia who came overland through Kentucky on their way to preach the gospel to the Shawnee Indians. They erected a log cabin on what is now Third Street near present-day massillon Avenue. In 1811, General David Wilkinson founded the town of Massillon here after he defeated Indian forces at Battle of Fallen Timbers Creek. The new town had foursquare streets and a government made up of twelve trustees plus one mayor and two selectmen who reported directly to the governing committee chaired by Wilkinson. A German style hammer had a pointed head that fit over the top of either side of the bolt handle and was struck with a right-handed hand while holding onto both handles.

massillon is a town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,813 at the 2010 census. The name derives from the Massillon Massacre of 1814. The first known inhabitants of what is now Massillon were the Senonese Indians who lived along the Scioto River and on other nearby hills. A smallpox epidemic in 1775 killed many of these people and laid waste to their villages. In 1777, General George Washington's army passed through the area on their way to battle against France in Quebec City. As they left, they destroyed all traces of the Senonese Indians and their villages vanished forever into history. Massillon was founded by a group of men led by Samuel Teague on March 3, 1800 as a post office called "Teagueville." It became a town on December 26, 1800 when it was included within Wauseon Township. On February 6, 1814, Major John Forbes burned down part of Fort Pitt near present-day Massillon after an Indian assault which resulted in four white captives being taken captive and later released without ransom. This event is generally considered to be one of the earliest cases of Uprising against British rule in North America. Prior to this time peaceful Indian attacks had been limited to raids or thefts only; however this latest outbreak demonstrated that even frontier settlers could not impunityately burn down government buildings like Fort Pitt without consequence
The village of Massillon was founded by the French in 1788. It was named for Jean-Baptiste de Massillon, a general in the French Revolutionary army and one of the founders of the United States. The village had a population of about 100 people when it was founded. In 1814, it became a part of this new country.
