Massillon is a city in and the county seat of Mahoning County, Ohio, United States. The population was 27,723 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus metropolitan area. The name "Massillon" comes from Massa or Masterman (-e-n), meaning "the master." The first settler in what is now Mahoning County was Nicholas Hildebrandt who arrived in 1788. He named his new land for George Washington, as he had served as commander of British forces during the American Revolutionary War. In 1812, Abraham Lincoln came through this area on his way to Gettysburg and called Massillon ''an excellent place''. The town of Massillon was platted in 1814 by Sidney Atherton and James Fenton. The town was named for General David Dixon (1754-1825), a Major General in the American Revolution who fought at Monmouth Court House and Yorktown. Davis Manufacturing Company built its first factory here in 1819. In 1827, John Sweeny founded the Toledo Glass Works here with five partners; two were friends of Sweeny's father-in-law Amos Wright (1792-1867). In 1860, when Ohio became a state under the newly formed United States Constitution, Massillon became its capital city and continued to serve as its official government center until 1907 when that function moved to Cleveland because of concerns about fire hazards caused by manufacturing operations located near downtown Cleveland's rapid growth. massillonexpressmail@gmail.com
