Grant's father-in-law Major General George Armstrong Custer who died there on July 22nd 1863 while leading his brigade through town to battle against Confederate forces under General Robert E Lee outside Perrysburg: "In 1865 when Union troops occupied this city they found extensive damage done both inside and outside the walls where cannonballs had riddled entire buildings...Massillons citizens had been ordered to surrender without any fight or resistance though many women and children lay dead or wounded within’." massillons history

Massillon is a city in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 21,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Youngstown–Geauga Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area around Massillon became known as the "Mormon Hills" because of the large Mormon settlement that developed there in the early 1800s. The first Europeans to visit what is now Massillon were French missionaries, led by Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne, in 1796. In 1801, General James K. Polk visited and inspected Fort Mifflin near Massillon and ordered its construction as a military post to provide protection against Indian attacks on central Ohio River settlements. The fort served as a base for development of the region around Massillon until it was abandoned in 1853 after American forces burned down most of Fort Mifflin; today's Old massilonite cemetery nearby provides evidence of the fort's role in early settler life. In 1806, George Rogers Clark surveyor named three small townships – Athens Township (later Athens), Clinton Township (later Clinton), and Fillmore Township (later Fillmore) – within what are now Stark County on his map of Ohio Territory; this area included much of what is now eastern Geauga County including present-day Massillon. In 1830, when Perrysburg was founded by John Deere & Company engineers working for Colonel Elijah Woods Sr., it became one of several places where goods from Indiana were brought upriver by canal before being transported via wagon road through Kentucky and then across Pennsylvania to be sold at marketplaces throughout Great Britain and Europe before arriving in America. A stagecoach route connecting Perrysburg with Cincinnati ran through Massillon twice daily between 1830 and 1840; both trips originated at Canton station on Main Street near present day Parkview Drive east of I-70 exit 20b/US Route 11 northbound/eastbound lanes). After Perrysburg grew too populous for canalside transportation options during the 1850s, wagons began using turnpikes instead which allowed larger items like furniture to be transported more easily from Illinois over shorter distances while avoiding high hills or rivers needed for shipping containerized goods such as cotton or flour offshoot Interstate 70 west to Akron,. This opened up many new opportunities for businesses downtown including localiterprises such as millinery stores along 5th Avenue North between Spring Garden Road and Canal Avenue which catered to wealthier locals who could afford better quality fabrics than produced elsewhere east of Toledo beginning about 1850.. By 1860 there were over 30 businesses Downtown serving warrants outcallers living primarily above Central Hotel located on 4th Street between Statehouse Square westward from Erie Boulevard southward past current day University Circle eastward all told There was also an extensive Masonic Lodge built prior to 1870 called Temple No inconsiderable sums had been raised thru subscription
